Finches will often lay eggs, even if there is no male. Make sure that they have additional calcium. I fostered several zebra finches for a few months. Cute little 'squeeks' Would take egg shells, wash and dry totally, and but them through the blender until they were a fine powder. Would also take a few dry peas and carrots and powder them too, and sprinkle over their seed. Don't put the pocket nests in the cage... it encourages them to lay. If they do lay, take the eggs put them in hot water for about 20 minutes and return them to the spot they were layed. The momma will sit on them, and eventually abandon them. The heating just ensures that when you do finally remove them after abandonning, they won't go crunch and stink . They love millet sprays! They love their baths! Get one of those little birdy baths that you can attach to the outside of the cage so they can splash away and not get water spots on your furniture! They can live up to 12 years. |

What kind of finches are they? The coloring sounds an awful lot like Societies. If so, they are such sweet little things. In addition to what Copperlyne said, I microwave the eggshells before powdering them to feed, to prevent salmonella and other bacteria. I don't bother with a blender, don't even own one, but crush them with my fingers. They crush easily after microwaving because that dries them nicely. About 2 minutes in my low power micro makes them just right. Less time in a high power one. Don't allow them to brown. You can also feed well done scrambled egg, or hard boiled egg. I fed raw peas, carrots, corn and cooked brown rice without grinding it up to all my finches. Their little beaks are sharp enough to cut thru the "shell" of those foods. Let us see pics when you take some. Annie |

Annie, I nuke the shells too... even for the big guys. I still powder them though, and when they get their scrambled eggs, I mix the powder in with the egg... a bit of chopped pepper, and they all get the additional calcium they need, and no shells on the floor to vacuum |

Coloring sounded like Societies to me, too. They are nest-sleepers in the extreme, so I'd give them a bamboo nest to sneak into at night. Just one is fine for both of them. I've seen them stuff at least 8 into one of those things. |

Copperlyne, I added that because if you don't mention it, lots of people will not realize that the shells must be cooked to be safe. I add crushed eggshells, or calcium powder, plus crushed red pepper flakes to our omelettes and cook til very well done. They love that stuff. My Maxi pionus knows when I am cooking eggs. She flies to the floor and watches me thru their glass door. She has to stand right up next to the door to see me, so I never have figured out how she knows what I am cooking. It's the only time she ever watches me. Annie |

Annie, that's totally cool... I'll get going on something, and forget an important item... like making babana nut bread and forgetting the nuts... Jeremiah and Lacy will hear the door of the microwave open, and both make the sound of the thing shutting off... and that's from the livingroom. |

I have done that so often! One of the family jokes, is one Christmas I decided to make butter tart squares instead of butter tarts. I had never made them before, so when the tops were really crispy and difficult to cut without them breaking all apart, I wasn't sure if this was normal or not. Anyway, the next day I went to stick something in the microwave, and there was the ramekin with the butter in it that I had melted the day before for the squares! Butterless butter tart squares ... I've never lived that one down! Abby |

That's exactly why I follow recipes to the letter. Then after I "think" I have it right, I go back thru and check to see if I put everything in it. When I was a very young wife, I made cookies and discovered I was out of shortening. I used shortening in which I had fried potatoes, after it had re-hardened. You can just imagine what those cookies tasted like. Yuck!! We couldn't afford to throw away a whole recipe of cookies but I had to. Abby, I have never heard of butter tarts or butter tart squares. Would you share the recipes, please. Annie |
