Hello my name is Taylor, and I am a proud Zebra Finch owner. I currently own 6 Zebra Finches. I have owned up to nine, but my mom will not let me keep anymore right now. One of my female finches just died. I beleive she was egg bound and had complications, but she shared a large cage with my other birds. She had a full stomach and appeared to be healthyI am very afraid that she may have gotten my other birds sick. Can you please tell me what I can possibly do to prevent or at least help my other birds so that no more will die? I keep cuttle bone in the cage, clean it weekly, and know the warning signs of a sick bird, but it happend so quickly. She was fine that morning when i left for school. Thank you for your help,

First of all I am so sorry about the death of your bird! Welcome to BB, and I hope we can help you. The first thing you need to do is take the bird in to your avian vet for a necropsy ( like an autopsy for humans). He or she can then tell you what happened and what to do. You should also clean and sterilize everything in the cage, that would help somewhat too.
Your parents might balk at the expinece of this but it is vitally important to find out how the bird died so you may protect the others. If you can't go in today, put the bird in a plastic bag and place it in the frig,  ( not the freezer) until you can get him into the vet . Do not wait long to do this. Nan

Hello, Taylor.  I am so very sorry that you lost your bird, especially when there had been no warning signs.

To determine exactly why your bird died, your avian vet would have had to perform a necropsy very shortly after she died.  None of us are able to tell you, sight unseen, why she died, so there's no way, really, for us to advise you on what to do to protect the other birds.  You really need to talk to your vet about this situation.  If she was egg-bound, that would be something that would not affect the other birds anyway, unless an infection was present.

I would suggest that you double check the birds' environment:  is it really big enough for 6 finches, some of which are nesting perhaps;  do you keep it fresh and clean every day?  How about their diet?  Do you include fresh veggies and a bit of fruit, in addition to their seeds/pellets?  Is their water always clean and plentiful?  Do they get some natural light while being protected from too much?  Do they get 10 - 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night?  Are they all compatible?  Discuss these things with your vet and perhaps it will give him/her some clues.

Again, I'm sorry for your loss.  Good luck with the rest of your finches.
