I'd like to take Kyra to work with me for a short period of time, any suggestions on the transporting?
I have a small carrier I brought her home in & to the vet but she absolutely hates it(she hangs on the bars w/beak & feet & screams).
  Thanks,

Karla

I used to take my macaw to the office with me--used a carrier  with a perch in it--and had 2 pvc play perches-one for on my desk--one on the floor.  Both collapsed flat when he wasn't there. If you work with others and this is comon make sure nobody is bringing a dog or cat that same day--or bird! I carried Vin in on my arm one day only to open the door on another macaw--we had surprised macaws all over the place!     Katz

I love little stories like that, that's what makes birds such wonderful pets.  They are so interactive and funny.  I told my daughter they are 2 year olds forever, that's why you fall in love (and stay there) with birds.

That's why I miss my love bird.  If she could have been house (paper) broke I would have kept her, and my husband and daughter would have helped me take care of her.

I have some pictures of her and the baby bird we got later.  I loved watching her teach the baby bird new things.  But when the baby bird had a red mark between her eyes, I was sure the older bird had jealously been picking on her.  So I put the older bird in the 'time out' cage and called the breeder I got the baby bird from. (that was also her name 'baby bird')  We put our heads together and stayed in contact daily, but the spot only got bigger, and she chirped constantly!

Finally we discovered it was just her red spot coming in, and in insistant chirping was her singing love songs to the other bird.  Imagine how I felt!  But baby bird wouldn't stop singing and I couldn't keep their cage clean as I was very sick at the time.  so I had no choice but to adopt them out.

I had the person come over 3 times and counseled with them and brought her out on each occassion.  Then when I was sure they understood all that was encompassed in their care I let them adopt her.

I called the every weekend for 5 weeks, then gave them my name and phone no (to be sure they had it) and told them they could call me if they had any problems, wanted to get rid of them or were going out of town on vacation and I would babysit for them.

keep in touch,

Well, I couldn't get Kyra into her carrier comfortably & she loves to hang out on the back/side of my neck & look over my shoulder(maybe so she can poop down the front of me ; ) so I took her for a car ride perched on me.
She didn't seem freaked out, she just sat on my shoulder & looked out the back window of my van.  I hold her tucked into my shirt firmly when I go outside so she can't get away & she seemed fine with it.
Another question, I'm not sure if it's her grip(strength) or her claws, but she just about breaks the skin when she perches on me, how do I know if her nails need trimming?  They're black & I can't see the quick of them.
 Thanks much!

The quick is easier to see if you put a flashlight behind it.  I usually take all the quakers in to Wings of the World, a fabulous bird shop, for a trim when their claws get a bit scratchy.  I used to do their claws myself but found I really like being put into the role of protector rather than perpetrator *chuckles*.  Plus, after Pippin gets his claws clipped he loves telling whoever did it off and trying to throw the clippers off the counter.  Its simply hilarious - everyone in the store usually comes over to see this little bird giving his opinion on nail trimming!  I dont think they'd forgive me if I started trimming their nails myself again, lol.

Always, Silver
