I am putting this here so those of you in illegal states don't buy a Quaker only to have it confiscated.

Abby,  I checked out this site for safety but if you need to junk this link, I'll understand.

I know a gentleman in Studio City that has a Quaker.  He tells everyone (with a completely straight face!) that it's a Conure....He's had it for years and years...before they were made illegal.  Tough call.

Probaly a dumb question but why are they illegal in some state? Is this because they are considered too wild to keep as pets?

I called Tn yesterday and talked to an wildlife enforcement officer that told me the quaker is a prolific breeder and they build very large destructive nest on power lines when allowed to "go wild".  He said they colonize and the noise and the mess they create for power lines and homeowners is the reason they are not allowed in TN.  He also said if it can be found in the wild, it is illegal to keep other types of animals also, he said he had conficasated a lady's pet skunk (she had it 8 years) and had it destroyed because it is illegal to have one captive in TN.   He said he had also taken 3 large cats, 1 bobcat, 2 cougars and placed them in zoos because private citizens can not keep them either.
He said you cannot even travel through TN with a quaker. If they find out, It will be taken.

Just want to point out one thing--these quakers are not just escaped or lost pets--there are actually several species not native to North America thriving on their own here--these are birds that during the importation process escaped for one reason or another--either a crate full was dropped while in transit or something like that--the birds flocked and do very well on their own--the quaker being the primo survivor!   Now if pet birds do escape they just add to what authorities consider a problem. And we are just talking about quakers-As Sherry pointed out-several states and cities have lots of laws concerning other birds-or animals-so if your moving or traveling--check them out.

I know several vets that all agree they would never tell
This was a topic on a vet chatboard once and My wife being a vet tech I asked her she asked them
None said they would report Knowing that the owner was responsible and knowing that they would be destroyed
So I am Sure he has no doubt had his little "conure" to the vet  and not had any issue arise from it
