Wow, I just OK'd 8 new members today. That's great. It would be nice if our new members to send a little message to the group telling us a little bit about yourselves - what part of the country are you in? what made you want to join this group? Is there anything we can help with? And for us veteran members, how are things going? Tackled any of your projects? Making headway? Or, like me, realizing I am starting to backslide in many ways. Lots of unfinished projects, for example. I am in the habit of taking in bookcases missing shelves or that need a new back, tables that need to be stripped, and the latest -- a huge bird cage that needs to have rust scraped off and then repainted with nontoxic paint. Also, my mother and an aunt I haven't seen for years are supposed to come to see me in a couple of weeks. It's funny, when I know someone is coming over, it's like I suddenly really "see" my apartment and how much clutter has accumulated everywhere. aaarrggghhhhh. On the other hand, I had let my kitchen table pile about two feet high with newspapers, files, books, and other debris and it was making me feel really bad about myself. So, I spent a Saturday morning doing nothing but sorting and tossing. It is now mostly clear, and I have been careful to check it everyday to remove anything that is piling up again... On Fly Lady (a great group that helps think in an organized way about cleaning, decluttering, etc but very structured) -- Fly Lady calls these kinds of areas "hot spots" and reminds members everyday to clean hot spots. The group also advises you to "make your sink shine" -- this sounds a bit goofy, but what it means is make sure you do the dishes and clean the sink. As small a task as this might (or might not) be, it actually does have a positive psychological effect, and has the practical benefit of making that sink available when you need it for other things. So -- how are things going for everyone else? -- Brenda (group moderator) |

I got rid of the stacks of books I had all over the living room by reorganizing a couple of bookcases....& the whole time I was doing I could hear Mother saying, you have a sinkful of dirty dishes & a pile of laundry & you're playing with BOOKS? Where are your priorities? But at least I am not walking sideways & whacking book piles with my shins anymore & then having to stack them back up so I can do it all over again the next day so progress is progress I reckon. |

Hey Tess, I am in SW WI also. It's a small world, I know. I just joined and hope to get my house whipped into order so I can welcome guests again. Since I have gotten older and have health issues, I have ignored my home and stopped inviting people over. This is causing problems with depression too. When I do manage to clean something, no matter how small, I get a great feeling of accomplishment. I used to have a nice, tidy home when my kids lived at home. Hey, maybe it's the empty nest syndrome gone wild in my case, lol. Peggy |

i almost had my kitchen drawers and cabinets exactly the way i wanted them and then company arrives! A MOUSE!!! seems it made it thru the gas line for the stove. this 1 was smarter than the others cuz it stayed in the cabinets on either side of the stove. the others came out and never made it cross the kitchen floor cuz i have the greatest mouser, he even wears a bell on his collar. anyways, i had to empty all those cabinets, wash them and find other places for my bowls, canned goods, utensils and pot holders. i ended up doing this twice! cuz we got another! well nothing has been put back til we can move the stove and plug the hole w/ some steel wool. ive gone thru 1 huge box of magazines (articles/recipes i wanted) and only have 4 more to go! Yikes! LOL! craft room is looking great. den and front room r o.k. kitchen and dinning room will be o.k. when i do the afore mentioned. bathroom is good (storage could be better organized). my basement (tons of laundry & boxes), my bedroom (storing rummage sale clothes there), both porches (back is worse than front) and the shed (we have no garage) r just awful! i wanted to be planting some seeds this week for a garden but i dont think i will get the chance. since i'm in Wisconsin and we usually get snow til May, if i dont do seeds now then i will need to buy the plants later and that costs alot. oh well maybe next week. |

the paper battle -- I just cancelled my subscription to my town's local paper and signed up for the online version. If I want something, like a copy of a story about composting, I can just print it out. Up until now, my newspapers piled up on the kitchen table, then got moved to a storage bin to sort through "later" - but I find "later" almost never comes, not the way we live in today's overcommitted world. I also have cut my magazine subscriptions down to two. In the next couple of weeks, I will be purging my clothing. The more I work at conquering my clutter, the more it seems to me that -- Less is More -- more time, more space, more tranquility, more time with friends and family, or just enjoyng some "me" time. -- Brenda |
