Hello
Although I know about the side effect of metformin,I am taking it seriously and will try to see if quitting it for awhile will improve my being tired and weak.Regular test say that my kidneys are doing well, but since the symptoms of lactic acidosis include some of my symptoms,I am more than willing to go off them for awhile to see if I would do better.Especially since I cannot get the rid of my weakness or tiredness. Symptoms below.I will see my doctor on tuesday.
fast and shallow breathing
Muscle pain or cramping
weakness
tiredness or unusual sleepiness

I am new to this too, would someone please tell me what these "side effects" are?  The Metformin does tend to give me diarrhea, but what are the other side effects? Thanks, unfortunately I did not read the pamphlet that gives the info on the side effects.

I also take Actos.

Thanks,
Nan

Hi Nan...

Here is a site I found for you with info on Metformin.  The side effect info is almost to the bottom... but you can do the Ctrl+F key combo to find what you are looking for.   When the box comes up, type in side effects and it will take you to it.

Hope this helps you.

Huggles...

Glucose lowering drugs are grouped according to the mechanism by which they work.  Those in the class that is Actos work by addressing insulin resistance.  For those, like me, that do not have insulin resistance taking Actos is like taking nothing.  Metformin works by addressing the function of the liver glucose production.  These 2 drugs are not interchangable.  Without reducing the liver output of glucose there needs to be insulin to counter it.  That can be orals that prod the pancreas into making more insulin or by the use of insulin.  I don't know how the new products stand in this result.

If you make a change go slowly and test often.  I would be interested in what your doctor says in this regard.
Betty

Hey AngelBear,

I too was getting leg cramps every night and I could pretty much figure out when it was going to happen, if your husband does some leg stretches it helps, I make sure I stretch my legs out like b4 a workout or going swimming and I no longer get cramps when I am sleeping

I fought to use Metformin despite the diarrhea, and I used Immovane.  However, the diarrhea re-occurred and I fought it again with Immovane, and then the last time I took Metformin, about 20 min. later I had quite an allergic reaction (anaphylactic shock).  Hives, and my tongue and lips felt really funny.  I had benedryl on hand, which I grabbed immediately, and it stopped the reaction.  I don't want to think about not having had benedryl on hand.

I had tried Metformin years ago, and my dr kept pressing me to take it despite horrific diarrhea.

Perhaps you should stop it.

Hi Nan, I am so sorry I forgot the link.  I could have sworn I had included it.   Well here it is http://diabetes.emedtv.com/metformin/metformin-side-effects.html.

I am on Metformin, it did have about two weeks or so with the diarrhea, and felt nauseated all the time, but with some rest and watching my carbs I found out that the diarrhea went away for me.  However, if I now eat something too high in carbs and too much of it, if it is near time for my Metformin, after taking it I do get a bit of a tummy upset.  I think it is just the Metformin helping to get rid of some of the extra carbs.   But that is just my opinion of it.   I personally think Metformin is a pretty good pill for me, but it is ultimately up to you and your doctor.  My step mother is a diabetic, but she doesn't take ANY THING as she is diet controled.  Her numbers are great.  I wish I could be like her.  But remember, what works for one person, doesn't always work for another.

The side effects will effect each person differently.  So, discuss all your concerns with your doctor and find out what you can safely take to counter act the side effects if you experience them.

Huggles...

Debra

I took metformin for about a month and was losing weight, feeling pretty good, except.......I had constant nausea and queasiness......almost like morning sickness.....no wonder I was losing weight!!! So I was taken off of that. I am not on any diabetic medication now, but have been on other meds for cholesterol and high BP - which seem to be working. Hope this works out for you.

I took Metformin for a week. I got sicker instead of better. I had alot of stomach pain, and just feeling so sick I could not function. Metformin/Glucophage is one pill that I would not reccoment. I am now on Amaryl 2mg a day and doing alot better. Dont let them tell you to keep taking something if its making you sick. Tell them that you refuse. You dont know what that pain is or if it damaging your pancreas or Liver. Take care of you.
dr's now a days are just promoting the pharmaceutical copanies. Not the patient. My Dr/s Office has at least 8 pharmaceutical reps a day! There are lots of pills for diabetes. Make him find the one for you!

The side effects do go away.  This is the 2nd time I have gone on it and I am still having side effects off and on and it is just about 2 weeks.  The breathing thing I don't have.  All theothers I do , but then I always do. From 1st day on it fasting was 230 and yesterday it was 135.  How long have you been taking it?  About a year and a half ago I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis.

Getting my sugars down has the most side effects.  I get spacey becuase I am used to the feeling of higher blood sugars.  Tired (but again I alsways am, although it is more right now.)  I am looking forward to the day that I have been at 70-90 fasting for a bout a month then I might start feeling like me again.  It will take a while.

I took glucovance for 5 years and had the side effects every single day.  I couldn't go to the store unless I knew where the bathrooms were and the embarrassment that goes with the side effect.  I finally told my doc I wasn't taking it any more..life has to be better than that. He reluctantly put me on Lantus and I have been fine since the second day. I can't impress how wonderful life is again.  If it means my life is shorter by a few years, so be it.  At least I can enjoy what time I have left.  The Lantus controlls my BS as long as I stick to the right foods and absolutely no side effects.  If some med has too man problems....change...every body is different and you have to find what works for YOU.
