Hi Sue,

I was diagnosed type 2 in 2005 and joined this group last year.  This is a wonderful group of caring people.

The first year was a bit scary for me, but now I feel healthier than ever.  My Dr. told me to do the finger tests in the morning before breakfast (fasting) and 2 hours after a meal.  One day after dinner, another after lunch, etc.  I actually tested a lot more than 2 times a day at first to figure out how different foods effected me.  Eveyone is a little different on how foods effect their blood sugar.  I now eat a large variety of foods.  I do eat a relatively low carb diet (avoid potatoes, white bread, rice for the most part).  I lost 30 pounds over that first year and started walking almost every day.  I found that going for a walk about 1 hour after a meal really helps keep my blood sugar in check.  I slowly increased the exercise and now am in a running group and do yoga, too.

Welcome to the group.
-Lisa

Sue,
Try to keep the exercize up. It seems to do more than most medications--it not only keeps your sugar down, but helps get your weight down, and reduces insulin resistence. I've found that I don't need as much insulin if I'm getting exercize. I've come to hate the days I sit in the office all day, because my sugar's going to be off, and I'll feel lousy. One thing I've done is set up a Gazelle in front of the TV in the family room. I walk as I watch, and find my sugar in good control.
Jim
