I absolutely agree that mixed insulins are not the best choice for good control. However, this article did not compare mixed insulins to a lantus and log combo. It compared it to long acting only or oral medication.

Premixed insulin, which combines short- and long-acting versions of the hormone, results in better blood-sugar control as compared with long-acting insulin alone or oral medications, a new study finds.

So in this case it may be a better choice, although far from the best choice available. I really wonder how they come up with these studies.
