So what kinds does everyone do here (bike, walk, weight lift, swim?) and how do you work it in with insulin and controlling lows?

Hi Pam-

Right now I am basically doing treadmill (cardio).  I try to do about 4 miles about 5x per week.  What works for me is doing it in the morning!  Here is what I do..I either don't eat at all until after I work out OR if I do eat..I take 1/2 of the insulin I would normally take.  I always take my Lantus..but it is the Humalog that will drop me hard if I work out on an "active" bolus.  I now keep my glucometer on my treadmill while I workout and I also keep skittles or some other glucose on the machine.  Nothing annoys me more then having to eat junk to keep up with my workout.  I keep trying to tweek my routine so that lows don't play a part in them but I have decided to not stress it and just do what I have to do.  I am sure this didn't help at all and I am sure you will find everyone has their own little tricks of what works.

Hi Christine,

Yeesh, I guess eating skittles does seem counter intiuitive. I can skip the candy, but I doubt a brownie, cake or garlic knot will help in a low and that's what I really like :)
My complex has a nice gym in it, so I just started using it. I would like to build up muscle in addition to cardio. I guess it would look funny to have someone walk in on me popping lifesavers while walking on the treadmill. Can I ask, how many units of Lantus do you take (at night or are you on the split dose?) and what's your carb to insulin ratio?

Pam-

I take 15 units of Lantus in the morning.  I find mornings work best for me and I don't need to split my dose to get 24 hour coverage ..so I don't.  My carb to insulin ratio is 15 to 1.  I typically eat a bowl of cereal in the morning and 2 units typically covers me..so if I will work out I will take 1 unit.  I always test before the workout and immediately after.  IF I feel funny at all during the workout..I test and eat some fast acting candy.

As far as looking funny eating candy and testing during the workout.  I too workout in a gym.  In fact, I just returned from Hawaii and I bought a 2 week membership to a very nice/very busy gym to use while I was there.  At first I was all caught up in how it looked that I had these things on my machine and how it looked that at times, I needed to gobble skittles mid workout.  After 2 days I decided I didn't give a rats how it looked!  I am there doing my thing and I do it my way.  I am one of those that tries very hard to get into my own zone while working out and the mental for me is almost more important then the physical.  I realized that anyone watching someone else in a gym isn't really there for the workout and I could care less what they think.  I am a big admirerer of people that go and workout and do whatever works for them...get your groove on and you will feel as if you are the only one in the room! ;)

By the way, I admire all the questions you have been asking and how you seem to be trying very hard to figure out what works for you..keep going!

I am not a Gym person......never was and doubt I'll ever be.  What I found works well for me is walking.  Over 5 years ago I asked a neighbor if I could join her on her nightly walks..........and we've been "walking partners" ever since.

I eat dinner around 5pm and head out for my 3-mile walk at about 6:30 - 7 o'clock.  We walk at least 5 times per week.  I test before I leave the house and again as soon as I get home.  I carry Starburst candies with me just in case I'm feeling low.  If the weather doesn't cooperate, I am usually forced to walk the "dreaded treadmill".  LOL

Good luck!

Thanks Christine and Karen,

Walking has pretty much always been my main exercise too (except some biking on weekends) The neurosurgeon really was beating into my head that building muscle really helps improve glucose control and helps metabolism (which of course every womens magazine reminds you of - Cardio and weight bearing, it's the answer to everything) My sister is only taking Lantus now in addition to her oral meds and works out 2x's a day. She only needs fast acting if she eats too many carbs. I don't think I can and/or want to work out that much :)

Thanks again for answering the questions (and of course, they are not even close to be done yet!)

What you do depends very much on what kind of insulin you are taking. If you get exercise lows from lantus the best thing to do is to eat a snack containing carbs before you work out. Although this seems counter productive, it does not have to be an unhealthy snack..a banana works great. Because you can't change the lantus dose once you take it you have to fix this with carbs.
If fast acting insulin is the issue then you can take less with the meal before you exercise.
I like to use gatorade for lows, or to prevent lows during exercise. The little 12 ounce bottles have 22 carbs, but I find they do not raise my blood sugar too much or cause a high later. I always have 2 of these by my bed, 2 in my gym bag etc. If anyone is concerned about how things "look" on your treadmill at the gym, nobody would think twice about you having a sports drink there.
Mostly it is trial and error and seeing what works for you. I workout everyday and I still do a lot of trial and error.
It is great that you are trying to figure everything out in advance. Try to relax until your doctor's appointment. You might think you have it all figured out and then he might have a whole different plan for you.

I walk on my treadmilll nearly every day.  I seldom have problems with lows and exercising.
