More people go to college now then in the past century.

Do you think that we are getting any smarter then our ancestors were?

Why or why not?

Yes,I think we are smarter. In the past century most parents were happy as long as their kids finished High School. Now more parents are insisting a college education for both boys & girls.Women are more concerned about getting a career than being a homemaker.

I can't speak for actual gray matter, but today we are exposed to so much technology,  everyone's brain is getting a  more intensive work out.

Yes and No.

Yes - because of what absolutelystumped mentioned.  We are exposed to more technology.  We have computers and calculators and GPS systems

No - for the same reasons.  Because of computers, calculators, and GPS systems we do not work out problems in our head....we let gadgets do it for us.

A college education doesn't make anyone smarter. You have to be smart to start with.Of course college helps people to get better jobs.

most women are educated an able to support and take care of themself. they do not have to take a lot of crap and mistreatment from a man.  while years ago our grandmothers weren't able to do that.

I don't know that we're actually smarter than our ancestors, but we are more educated.  This may be off the subject, but last week my daughter and I were discussing different cultures in the world.   I remarked how Oriental people stand out in my mind as being so much wiser than other cultures, yet they seem to live much simpler and less stressful lives.  She responded it's because they listen to their elders.
When I asked her to explain, she said as a culture, they are taught to respect their elders, which means you listen to them, follow their advice and don't question their wisdom.  In our culture, even if we listen to our elders, we don't follow their advice.  Instead, we have to go out and try to find different answers or try other things and then we end up looking back, wishing we had listened.  (We had been discussing accupuncture, which Oreintals have been using for centuries.  For some reason, we do not...instead, we load our bodies with chemicals to cure one thing, but then we end up poisoning ourselves and develop other problems)
Sorry that I rambled!

Charlee-You came up with some good points,I wouldn't call it rambling at all.But you can respect your elders AND evolve too.You can take pieces from the past & still use them aka learn from your mistakes or use a time honored remedy.
As for genders, since the women's movement I never got called "Just a dumb ol girl"(at least wo sockin the guy, lol)

When I was in jr high I had a science teacher who told us, "Of course you're smarter than your parents. You have to be - you have so much more to learn." I don't think we're really 'smarter' but we certainly have more advanced ways of doing things, and a lot more to learn.

Do you think that we are getting any smarter then our ancestors were? I agree we are definitely more educated.

Why or why not?We learn from the past but gain from the future.
