Liz, do you have marriage Certificate in case it has his birthplace on it. I gather his death certificate didn't either. The other place to determine his place of birth (if military records don't have it) is his shipping records for entering Australia. the other place you might put an enquiry is on Monaro Pioneers site where Bombala Pioneers and residents are being recorded. He isn't listed there presently but if you put up what you know it grows. i found my great grandparents there and the only branch missing was mine. I did a quick check in Archives in NSW, Australian and commonwealth war graves to no avail. I hope mike turns up your man in military. Suzannd (Mackay, Qld) |

Mike & Sue, Many thanks for your replies - so quick! Mike, Soldiers coming into australia were not listed by name on immigration records only the regiment on board the ship. The 80th regiment came on quite a few ships over 6 years or so Sue. Yes I have a copy of his marriage certificate and there is absolutely no info on it other than the church where he married and his wifes name I thought that marrying in the presbyterian scots church may mean he was scottish but I don't know where the name Baldry comes from I also have copy of death certificate which has no extra details except his age and place of death I am doing this tree for a dear friend and this is the last gap to fill if possible Hoping someone will know of him or be connected to the same family. thanks again.............Liz |

Sorry forgot to say that I know about the Monaro pioneers site and have contributed quite a bit of info to it - wonderful site. I may resort to a message there very soon as I have only been looking for his place of birth for a couple of days and it is all very new Mike are you saying that a person who joined Staffordshire volunteers is very likely to be english? Would it be unlikely that a Scot or Irish person would join? Do you know if Baldry is an english name as I have never heard it before thanks again for your wonderful help............Liz |

Liz there may be a small chance that,Peter Baldry, Was Originally From Ireland. As The 80th Foot were in Cork Before going to Australia. But they were all volunteers from stafford. This is what Read via Messages on Net.We know Marriage was 1841.So it was The last year the Regiment was there. So he Looks like he opted out to remain in Australia.Either That Or did a Runner Lol Mike In 1836 the Regiment left for New South Wales where it acted as Guards for the convicts. Between 1837 and 1841 the Regiment was based at Windsor, New South Wales, with detachments deployed throughout the colony. Late in 1837 the Acting Governor of the Colony, Colonel Kenneth Snodgrass ordered Major James Nunn to lead a detachment against the Kamilaroi tribe. In late Jan 1838 Major Nunn, leading an Ensign, three Sergeants and nineteen troopers down the Gwydir River, Came across a great many Aborigines. After a Corporal attempted to arrest an Aboriginal native, in response to which he was speared in the calf, a chain of events occurred which became known as 'The Slaughterhouse Creek Massacre'. This was the last Military Action undertaken by British troops against the Aboriginal population. During 1839 Major Thomas Bunbury was forced to suppress a mutiny within his own men whilst Commander of Norfolk Island. 80th Staffordshire Volunteers 13/11/1836 from Cork the 80th Regiment left for Sydney. This comprised of only the first detachment. The remainder of the detachments leaving Cork on the 18th of December 1838. Detachments were deployed to Norfolk Island and some to New Zealand. Eventually reuniting in Sydney in 1844, the Regiment sailed for India on the 12th of August 1844. 1837 1844 yellow pointed pairs |

Mike, Many thanks for all this info. I had already accessed this site as I have known the person who started it for a couple of years and his site is fantastic as he has put so much work into it I know our archives in n.s.w. have PRO records on film from england but the problem is that they are very difficult to follow as they are in original handwriting and often faded and difficult to read and also some of them are out of sequence I went through them for my gg grandfather who was with the 99th regiment of foot (Lanarkshire reg.) a couple of years ago to find the ship he came on and more info but you need extremely good eyesight to read these film records and unfortunately I do not have this luxury any more I am also unable to travel into the city as I am not very mobile. Another family member is going to check these out as soon as she can but she lives in the country a long way from sydney but is going to do it in the future so we may have to wait This Barrie Chapman has done a tremendous job with listing british soldiers who came here and he is giving them their own page if people send him enough info on any particular soldier so they will not be forgotten The poor soldiers were not always treated very well either & if they did anything wrong they were punished severely. I have also been in contact with Ken and he is a fountain of knowledge. thanks again for all your trouble..............Liz |

Hi Liz I had a reply from Jim Massey for you Dear Michael,
Thank you for your e-mail. We do not hold any records of individual soldiers, they have always been held centrally.
Please read the attached letter and write to the National Archives in Kew. They should be able to give you basic details such as date of enlistment and date of discharge. Sometimes they have dates of service abroad.
The 80th regiment served in Australia from 1837 - 1844 and served in New South Wales, New Zealand, Norfolk Island and I think they were also in Queensland. They were mainly involved in providing detachments to guard convict work parties.
When you have the dates of Peter Baldry's service, please get back in touch and we will try and pass on details of where the 80th were.
Yours sincerely
Jim Massey
