Hello again,

I am trying to find  some information about my great grandfather GILBERT HIGGINS and would value any help please in trying to find this.

He was born in --almost certainly--C Antrim c 1838.

In 1861 he married at AHOGHILL, Ballymena  Co Antrim to Annie Darragh. It stated that his residence was AHOGHILL  (but as he was a soldier, he was probably in normally in barracks elsewhere)

His father was HUGH HIGGINS a weaver. I have this from a  copy of the marriage record. This was in the 1st Ahoghill Presbyterian Church by licence --which I think often happened with soldiers because of sudden leave or postings.? However--it said it was a civil marriage ,which as it was in a church, I don't understand?

The couple had several children and I have birth details of all but one. They were registered at Ahoghill.Mike found this out for me
some time back.

Gilbert appeared to be alive in 1887 --on the wedding record of a son (by then living in Scotland) , it said that GILBERT was a labourer but didn't say he was deceased.

By the time of the 1899 Scotland census, his wife Annie & family had moved to Scotland and his wife was down as a widow

What I am trying to discover is:

Where he was born--it may not have been in Ahoghill as he may have gone there in order to marry-- he married by licence --and who his mother was.

Where and when he died. I am assuming that this was in Ireland--have tried Scotland. He had left the army by 1887as he was described as a labourer on his son's marriage record.

The birth info for what appeared to be his last child. She was MARY HIGGINS and, according to the 1891 census for Scotland, she was born in Ireland c 1880--however--this may not have been like the others, in Co Antrim

I would be very grateful for any help/advice/information as to any of these please.

Thank you--Eileen

This is a tricky one Eileen, especially as we know so little about Gilbert.

Can you tell me what his middle name was?  Or perhaps Gilbert was his middle name.  Also, can you tell me the years of birth of his children?  This might give us a clue as to his whereabouts.  Please tell me any other details you may know, however small.

Thank you.
Marian

Hm-mm nail hit on head there Marian methinks.

As far as I know Gilbert only had one name--however, he had a sister called Mary Jane who married about 1852  a Samuel  Mc Fall in Ahoghill. I did try to trace her marriage some time ago,as it should have given me info re their parents but couldn;t.
When William (see below) lived in Scotland aged 18, he was on the 1881 census as a nephew and with him were 2  boys named McFall--the head of the house was a woman so she may have  been a McFall pre marriage--she was born in  C Antrim

When Annie Higgins went to live in Scotland she lived in Busby-and died there too. and when  son Hugh married he also lived in Busby. William also lived in Busby after his marriage.

Children:

There is William bc 1865 --marriage record-- my father used to talk about uncle Willy & my cousins & I can remember  granny (Jane) talking about him--she was a witness at his wedding & it seems her favourite brother.

There is Gilbert--so far I haven't found him anywhere--birth or census-- but again my father used to talk about him-so he must have lived in Scotland.

I have birth dates for:

Hugh Higgins-----25/07/1864
Thomas Higgins--15/11/1866--he was also a witness at William's wedding
Jane Higgins ------10/04/1872--must have died as there is a later Jane-but no record found.
Jane Higgins-------21/01/1877 -my grandmother.Granny always had her birthday on 1st April! maybe registered then when dad came home?!Often wonder if the 2 birth records got confused at some point as Jane number 1 was born in April even though the 10th not the 1st!
Clara Higgins----- 27/09/1879

Mike found these for me some time ago --IGI--and said that they were born in Ahoghill

There was also another child Mary Higgins who according to census returns was born c 1880--I knew her as she & granny lived together in Liverpool from well before I was born. Her birthday was  on 27th September (same day as my father's was)  like Clara's. It has only just just struck me as I wrote the birthday down--I wonder if Mary was Clara--i.e had both names but for some reason dropped Clara--I have never heard the name Clara used in the family--Clara doesn't turn up on the census forms in Scotland.Well! well!!

If you want to resign now--I quite  understand--I think I'll be joining you.!

That is all I know

Thank you--Eileen

Just posted Marian and then saw this. Does it say if either of the Hugh Higgins in Ahogill was a weaver? Gilbert's father according to G's marriage  record was a weaver

Sorry Eileen, I don't know Hugh's occupation.  I only have access to the usual Griffith's and it's not like a census.

Eileen - I checked the IGI again for children of Gilbert and Annie (below).  I notice that Annie's surname was recorded as Darragh, and also DANAGH.  The latter sounds to me more likely to be correct.

Marian--again my thanks for all your work on my behalf--you have ceratinly been very busy.Answers to your messages all in one here!

Wasn't sure if occupations would be listed or not.

Re births from IGI--yes--they are the ones I have. However, when I tried to find them--a few times--on IGI I couldn't and I think that there is only one IGI?I don't think that there is a separate one for Ireland? (Wonder where Gilbert & William were registered.)

Re Darragh/Dannoch--you have more experience than I have and Darroch & Dannoch do look more easy to mistake for each other, but I am fairly sure that Darragh is correct. I have a printed copy of the marriage record from Ancestry Ireland and that says Darragh

During the war, my father was stationed briefly, not too far from where I now live and he visited some "cousins" named Darroch some of whom who he said spelled the name differently--he told me this years later. I have just checked the telephone directory and there are Darraghs and Darrochs there--4 of the former--2 of the latter, amd I am debating about contacting them. Will try the census returns for the area too--also for Higgins

I have looked at the web site you mentioned and I think that I need more information before I can get a death cert for Gilbert Higgins. I don't know anything at all. other than he had left the army-but he could have died anywhere in Ireland or Scotland for that matter. I have tried Scotlands people a few times--again yesterday I know they--like other places-are adding to records all the time

I have contacted the Nat Archives too but again I need  more info than his name and age --I had hoped that these days his name/age & next of kin might have traced him

I checked with my older cousin re the date of Mary Higgin's birthday and I was right--it was the same day as Clara's and the year is approx correct as census returns say abt 1880--Clara was 1879 I know.If she was Clara Mary she may have been known as Mary

Re the Clara Mary Higgins marriage--I had thought it wouldn't be "ours" last year, but there was a mystery about a few years in Mary's life when she went away & returned with a baby----my father & aunt thought she was their sister as she was brought up with them and they were quite old before they knew she was their cousin and belonged to Mary.

She was  younger than my father who as born in 1908--and was illegitimate. My cousin who remembered our aunt (Hannah) , said that when she died--there was debate as to whether to register the death in her real name or in the same surname as my father which was how she was known.

If this is the same marriage, it could imply that after the event my aunt found it shouldn't have taken place. I have tried in England and Scotland for a few years to find a birth & death for Hannah, lady but have looked under Higgins & Ballantyne & maybe in the wrong country for the birth.

Again--my thanks Marian for all yuor help

Eileen

You're welcome Eileen, and thank you for the feedback.  We really appreciate it when members respond.  As with most - if not all - families, the research is not so straightforward as we might expect.

The IGI is found on the Family Search site.  Go to Advanced Search, then click on IGI on the left side bar.

Rest assured we will keep trying for you, so do keep an eye out from time to time in case we find anything for you.

Take care
Marian

Managed to find the right place on IGI thank you Marian & found a couple of the children

I also thought to look up a marriage between Mary Higgns & the husband I knew all my life--in Liverpool--had tried befoe but there it was today--it was  in 1916 and her name was Mary M Higgins so think that excludes her from  being Clara Mary! However--!?!

Will let you know of course, what /if find anything more about any of the family.

Was this the marriage you found, Eileen?

Marriages Dec 1916

Higgins  Mary M  Threlfall  W. Derby  8b 854
Threlfall  William G  Higgins  W.Derby  8b 854

The volunteers at FreeBMD are transcribing all the time, so new records are constantly being added to the database.  So it's worth checking back frequently.  Glad you found that anyway.
