Hi all,
I'm looking for information about Hugh John MC GHEE (MacGhee, McGee, MacGee) who was born about 1847 in Coleraine, Londonderry, parents John McGhee and Mary Shield.
Hugh came to Australia and married in New South Wales in 1880, Mary CLARKE who was born about 1855 in Maghera, Londonderry, parents James Clarke and Margaret Anne Young.
John McGhee and James Clarke were both farmers, and, I believe, never left Ireland.
Thanks in anticipation,
((*-*))  Bev

Hi Bev
I'm hoping to be able to help you with your search in Co Derry for the McGees and Clarks.  As yet I have not found any definite birth records but have checked out what records there are at Derry Genealogical Centre .  This is what I found in the indexes:

They have baptismal records for May Clarkes born in the following years:

1851, 1852, 1855, 1860.  For Mary Anne Clarke 1855, for Mary Ann Clark 1857 and 1858 for Mary Jane Clarke

For Hugh McGhee it doesnt look as if they have a record. There is only one possible and that is Hugh MAGEE born 1852.

Unfortunately Derry records are not yet available online but I'm sure they will be available soon through the Irish Family History Foundation who are in the process of making all irish records available online.  The site is:

Just register and click on the map on the county you're searching and you can search for the records.

I didnt find any marriages available at derry genealogy for either sets of parents.

Sorry there is nothing more definite as yet but I will keep checking.
Cheers
Teri

Hi bev
Still checking on your behalf but have yet to find any definite birth or marriage records.  I did check out Griffith Land Valuation which took place between 1848 and 1864 to see if I could pinpoint exact location of your McGee and Clarke families. However there are a few people with each of the names so I'm no closer to knowing which are yours!

For John Magee (didnt find McGee or McGhee)
There were persons of that name leasing land in the following areas:
Ballylifford, Ballinderry prish
Catherine Street, Newtownlimavady
Waterside, Killowen
Ardvarness, MacOsquin pairsh
Gulladuff, Maghera parish
Tamlaght
Mallymaclary and Duncrun, Tamlaght and McGilligan parish

Similarly James Clarkes were found leasing land in Maghera Parihs in the following townlands;
Ballymacilcurr
Craigmore
Drummuck
Falgortrevy
Gulladuff
Macknagh

Since we have a John Magee and a James Clarke both in Gulladuff townland, Maghera parish, these might be the ones.
