Hello, Have had no luck in tracing the ancestry of my G3Grandather Henry McDermott(c1793)and his Son(my G2 Grandfather)James McDermott(c1821)both being Irish Born. The English 1861 census has James as being born in Dundock,Ireland, believe this could be Dundalk in County Louth. Henry appeared in a boarding situation inKnotty Ash,Liverpool on the 1841 Census and unable to find a entirely certain sighting after that, does appear to have died in the 2nd quarter of 1867 in the West Derby District,Liverpool. James married Elizabeth Antrobus in Liverpool on 2nd feb.1845 and lived, until his death in the 1st quarter of 1891(he does not appear on the 1891 Census). He was a labourer on the 1851 Census and, after that,a mason/quarryman/quarrymans labourer(there was a quarry close to Walton Village). Any assistance you can give in tracing the roots of these ancestors would be invaluable. Best wishes, Rob Kellett,Morrinsville,New Zealand |

Hi Mike, I believe that Henry had left Ireland before 1841(I suppose he could have returned to Ireland for a while, but it doesn't seem likely, does it?).The 2nd message has a 1796 registry date(approx my Henry's birth)but does this relate to the Land-holders birth or registation of the holding? Must admit that I'm not familiar with these kind of documents and would appreciate any help you can give in illuminating them to me. Best Wishes, Rob |

Thanks Mike, looks a bit like Mission impossible doesn't it?If they are like other members of my various ancestry lines, they will be of the lowest class and probably didn't own or lease anything which probably makes it harder. From my records, the marriage of James to Elizabeth Antrobus was in a Roman Catholic church, although their daughter Elizabeth McDermott married in St Michaels,Toxteth on 20/12/1882 after Banns,so that would have been an Anglican Service,William McDermott was one of the witnesses. Further to what you're doing,I did have a look at several McDermott records in the Census' hoping to see some of "our"family staying with them, but,to date without success. Will have a further search in that area,I think, will let you know if anything of note comes up. Best Wishes, Rob |

Hello Mike, Have to admit defeat, haven't seen anything that I can honestly say relates to"my" Henry and James. If the family came over would, almost certainly, have been to Liverpool.Henry appears to be living apart from James, perhaps not a very close relationship. Best wishes, Rob |

Hi Mike, Thanks for that, guess you don't want to leave any stone unturned. It is hard to follow on though,I reflect on how many of these situations have their solutions within Family, the problem is in contacting people who have information and don't even know it.I haven't succeeded in identifying, let alone getting in contact with, any descendant of Elizabeth McDermott's siblings. Best of luck with all your projects. Rob and Jan |

Hi Mike, Have had a look on the Multimap(sourced via a link on Curious Fox)Dundock not listed in C.Fox but Drogheda is,note that it's South of Dundalk on mouth of the Boyne River and almost half way between Dundalk and Dublin. I suppose that both Henry and James would have been 2 of many thousands who left Ireland around the middle of the 19th century,I expect whole families moved on and left little trace behind. Thanks for your continuing interest. Rob and Jan |
