I think we can safely say that Elizabeth and James were certainly brother and sister as not only are the same parents listed but they also have the second Christian name of Thomas.

Hi Debbie

Jane's baptism was certainly 16 August but it was 1846, not 1848 as you say - here is the LDS record I have found:

JANE COUCH Pedigree
  Female

Event(s):
Birth:
Christening:
16 AUG 1846   Saint Keverne, Cornwall, England
Death:
Burial:

Parents:
  Father:  JAMES COUCH Family
  Mother:  JANE

From the initial information you gave me, I have certainly found Jane on the 1851 census (which would be the first one she would be listed on due to her birth year) with parents James and Jane, along with siblings:

Elizabeth Christened 3.5.1840 St Keverne

John Willy Christened 27.3.1842 St Keverne

Grace Christened 12.7.1844 St Keverne

Josiah Christened 19.11.1848 St Keverne

This is the only family on the 1851 census that lists a Jane Couch with parents James & Jane that fits the year and area of her birth in 1846.

Maybe you'd like to check over the information I've found, above, and then let me know if you would like me to search anything further.

Well Debbie, the entry for James is definitely the correct one - as we do know his parents were William and Loveday.

The entry for Grace Couch I think is connected but I'm not sure how.  Her birth year would have been c1776 if she was 60 in 1836.  This would make her too old to be James' mother (the individual shown in the 1841 census with parents James & Jane and sibling Elizabeth).  We know it's not the mother of James born 1809c but could possibly be William Couch's mother.

The William Henry Couch sounds feesible as a sibling of your Jane from the year of birth - 1836.  I'm not certain why he would have been buried with this Grace though.  I could understand if this had been Grace, the first wife of James as it could have been William's mother of course.

The entries for William and Albert.  Again I'm uncertain about these as so far they have not featured in either the 1841 or 1851 censuses with the same family group as before (ie: James, the head, Jane the wife, Elizabeth and James the children).

Regarding the birth dates, well, I've only managed to find what has shown up on LDS  - sometimes the birth dates are shown, sometimes just the Christening dates - however, I have found that there occasions where these are actually the same date!

I will have a look into Albert and Henry to see if I can throw any light on these two and their connection to your Couches.

Sorry I'm not sounding more helpful at this stage.

Well I'm confident the James and Josiah records are correct.  William Henry and Henry Pearce are possible on the basis the parents Christian names fit - though don't take this as red.

The others I can't say - I've found no evidence for them which fits the rest of the family.

The only really certain way is to obtain birth certificates which of course isn't always easy!

As for Willian and Loveday my guess (and it is a guess) is that they remained in England - if you scroll back up you'll see the death entry I found in Helston for a Loveday Couch - I believe this to be yours.

Now, armed with all this information, maybe you'd like to digest what we have and then get back to me with the direction you'd like me to follow.

Hope this helps.

Bearing in mind how, over the years, names often become mis-translated or even changed, I'm finding that for the surname Hoekin the information forthcoming has been spelt Hocking.  Funnily enough I've found this previously when looking for a Hocking on behalf of someone else it had been transcribed as Hawkin.  Now with this in mind, and the location of St Keverne, I'm wondering if this one might fit:

LOVEDY THOMAS HOCKING Pedigree
  Female

Event(s):
Birth:
Christening:
30 MAR 1777   Cury, Cornwall, England
Death:
Burial:

Parents:
  Father:  ARTHAR HOCKING Family
  Mother:  ELIZABETH

Cury isn't that far from St Keverne and even in those days people did move from place to place between their birth and marriage.

Have a look at this and see what you think.

With regard to William Couch's birth, there are quite a number coming up for a period 10 years + and - Loveday's birth.  On this basis it's rather like trying to find a needle in a haystack!

This link http://www.stkeverneparishcouncil.org.uk/cms/ might be worth looking at and if necessary contact, in the hope parish records may be held for that period.  If so either a birth record of James might help or better still the marriage record of William Couch and Loveday.  Have a look at the above and think about emailing them to ask if they hold records.

Good luck and do keep me posted!
