From: Jane (Original Message) | Sent: 2008/05/11 11:34 PM | I have been browsing this site but haven't had time to do much more yet... thought I'd take the lazy man's approach for now and hopefully be able to spend more time here soon (am nursing an injured dog). Briefly....I've been researching family tree for a number of years (8 or 9) but have been at a stand still for at least 5 and can unearth no additional info locally. Perhaps someone reading this may be able to offer advice. According to a local newspaper death notice and cemetery headstone, my gggrandfather was a James Kennedy, born 1804 in Kilkenny. He came to Newfoundland, now a province of Canada, at some point, married (possibly a Bridget Aylward in 1828 whose children inluded Anne, Wiliam Joseph, James but not able to confirm these as "my" James children.) For sure, my James had at least one child - a son John born 1842 who married a Catherine Ryan in Newfoundland and had children named Michael, Edward, Thomas, James, Catherine and possibly others. The family was RC - John's son Michael became a priest and the son of his daughter, Catherine, was also a priest. I would appreciate any help/suggestions. | |

My apologies - I think this email is going to the group but it was meant as a reply directly Mike in response to a posting of his. I'll send it anyway as it may be of interest to other readers. Hi Mike, Hope you received the email I sent you earlier today. After discussing your postings with my sister who has been helping me with the family tree, we wondered where you found the info about Father Mike Kennedy.?? He is indeed a relative but neither of us has seen the info about the chapel/church you mentioned anywhere in our findings! We do know he was parish priest in Cape Broyle (on what is known as the southern shore) for a number of years. I was always afraid of him (don't know why) but my sister remembers visiting him. I've been going through my hand written notes today and am mesmerized by the repetitive names....James Kennedy was very common here. And to confuse matters even more, a James Kennedy (no relation as far as I know) married a Catherine Kennedy (related) and that was a source of confusion for ages until I finally figured it out!! I'm now trying to sort out names of witnesses to marriages and baptisms in the hopes it may give further clues but it seems impossible. I do have a computer program that I started using several years ago but ran into some problems with it and that was the end of the program for me. I'm afraid I don't have the patience (or skill) to sort it out. I did look for more notes on Pierce Butler and found a marriage (probably wasn't the same person as it was in the U.S. but it probably had a Newfoundland connection as I must have found it locally - unfortunately I'm very much an amateur and haven't properly supported my findings although I am getting better at it). I also found an article that may have been about the father of the Pierce who was witness to James and Bridget's marriage (same name and he owned or worked on a farm known as Golden Grove near St. John's. I have found nothing more on this farm but it is a lead I plan to check out. Wish there were more hours in a day!!)) Searching for a Pierce Butler here is much easier than a James Kennedy!! Regards, Jane |

Hi Jane the section on Father wheelan taking over as Parish Priest After Michael Died Rev Hubert Whelan was born at Jersey Side, Placentia on 6 September 1934 to Annie and Raymond Whelan. He received his early education at Placentia and finished school when he graduated from St. Bon's in 1952. He attended All Hallows Seminary in Dublin for 6 years from 1953-1959. He was ordained by Archbishop Skinner at the Basilica on 13 June 1959 at age 24. His first assignment was as curate to Father Albert Slattery at Our Lady of Mt Carmel at Mount Carmel for two years from 1959-1961, followed by a short term at Sacred Heart Parish in Fox Harbour. Upon the death of Father Michael Kennedy at Cape Broyle in 1968, Father Whelan was appointed to replace him as Parish Priest at Cape Broyle. Records indicate he also covered Rushoon, following Father Joseph Barbour, for 2 years from 1971-1973. He remained as Parish Priest at Cape Broyle until his death in 1978, Father Bert, as he was called, died at Cape Broyle on 22 May 1978 at age 43. He was a Priest for one month short of 19 years. |
