11/9/04
I was about to step out onto my porch when I saw a red squirrel climbing up the steps. He went up to the landing , walked around checking things out, then back down onto a flower bed off the side of the porch. I stepped outside at that point & peeked my head over the side & just watched him. Then I started talking to him. He was a bit nervous, but stayed to listen. Then he took off across the lawn to join the other squirrels.

11/10/04
I was standing out on the porch, & a red squirrel (wonder if it's the same one) came up the stairs...stopped, & looked at me. I just stood there & talked to him. He just sat & watched & was looking right at me.

11-11-04
Today I was sitting out there & one came all the way up the stairs...looked at me...hopped over to the little chair across from me....jumped up on it & up onto the railing.....looked around & hopped back down, down the stairs & under the porch. Last 2 times he was as close as 2 feet from me & looking straight into my eyes!

Sounds like you have a new friendship forming Gypsy. If you want to encourage the friendship get some raw peanuts, they love those and will come looking for them if you put them out everyday. A word of warning though, Crow also likes them and you may end up feeding both Squirrel and Crow with your peanuts, LOL

Squirrel is a planner and gatherer and may be asking you to prepare, save money, or collect something. In preparing for winter Squirrel gathers only what it needs. This teaches you to discard not only unnecessary physical objects but those negative beliefs which limit your trust in love and abundance. Squirrel builds up stores so that it is prepared for anything unexpected. By hiding its food reserves in different places, it can survive even the longest winter. Its other characteristics are adaptability and speed. Its ploys to deceive and distract are unique. The energy of Squirrel makes it difficult to sit still for one moment or to listen to others. Seeing Squirrel in your dreams is a hint to prepare for the future, gather your strength, and brace yourself for significant changes. You should also get rid of any emotional "garbage" that will not come to anything anyway.

It is through Squirrel that we learn to gather and store our energies so they are available at times when they are most needed. Squirrel teaches the wisdom of preparing for the future, and not squandering all that we have on today. Your education progresses, you store knowledge for the ordeals to come.

Squirrel also teaches of the extremely important balance in a person's life between work and play -- and that everyone needs a good amount of each to feel happy, purposeful and well-adjusted. Squirrel warns that too much of either is foolish and can be dangerous, Squirrel represents a happy medium between the two. This Guide also reminds us to think of the implications of our actions, of what effect they have on ourselves, our family & friends, our fellow beings and our world.

Squirrel is resourceful, has a great ability to solve puzzles, and climbs to a higher place to avoid danger.

Squirrel is a powerful totem to call on at any time you feel stuck in your life or in a project and ready to give up. Its medicine teaches you that perseverance and the willingness to adopt different methods are the keys to success.

This animal also teaches us the importance of preparedness. No animal is busier than Squirrel during autumn, as it gathers nuts and seeds and buries them. For us humans preparedness is not only important on the physical level; it can mean being as flexible as Squirrel when it comes to allowing and initiating change.

Thank you for the response Hawk! I found connections with many of the descriptions there. By raw peanuts, do you mean the ones still shelled? I have some mixed nuts in the shells....could I set any of them out?

Yes Gypsy, just the plain old unprocessed, no salt added peanut in the shell. Around here you can get them in 50 lb. bags at the farmers elevator, that is the cheapest way to buy them. In think you can also get bags of them in some stores like Walmart or Orschelins. If you do not have a farmers elevator, take a drive out the to country some weekend and find a small farming town. Ask anyone where the local elevator is, you can also buy large quantities of other things like cracked corn and sunflower seeds for the birds (both of which Squirrel also loves) at an elevator. One trip a year will feed all your friends for the entire winter and can turn out to be a lot of fun too.

I guess I am lucky to have all these resources so close at hand here. The birds, squirrels and other assorted small animals that winter with us are all fat and sassy all winter long, though we have to find places to feed Squirrel outside the yard so they will be safe from our dogs.

Oh cool....we have all of that stuff right in the workshop-'cept the peanuts. My MIL always has seeds & corn for the birds & stuff, so I'll just put some on the porch on my side too. We're in the boonies here, so we have farmer's markets & agway & all that good stuff, so sometime I'll grab some peanuts too! Thanks Hawk!!!
