I First Met Lincoln in a pet shop in Niles Illinois, "Noah's Ark".
Asked the man behind the counter if he had any German Shepard Pup's available. He smiled, walked to the back and came out with this horse of a puppy sitting upright in his arms.
He was shy at first, and on the way home , as hot as it was,We stopped at a drive -thru for a big Ice water for him and a large coke for myself. That Boy Drank that huge cup of water down in like a matter of seconds. This was one of many amazing feats he would display to his new family. Lincoln loved his new home, toys for german shepards just havent really been researched. We bought him a sponge ball,a bumble ball(looked like a small mine that used to float in the oceans during the second world war and was as big as his head),A HUGE super-sized Tug Toy of rope and heavy nylon handles. After eating the Ball and Tug-Toy along with most of the bumble Ball pieces over night, the next day he found an old cobble stone Brick which at the ripe old age of 6 months,he used to carry around the yard in his MOUTH! He loved to toss it into the air and try to catch it.the thing came down one time and hit him square in the forehead. He Squeeked a little and then attempted to stomp it into the Grass of the lawn.Lincolns Favorite toys became a Brick and an old linemans boot (steel toed and knee-hi) He loved to play tug with the boot the foot end in his mouth so he could get a good grip on it and pull one of us off of our chair. When he lived in the city, linc loved to sit quietly by the back gate and when an unsuspecting human walked by,He would leap into the air barking and snarling at the poor un-suspecting individual. Many an outfit was soiled by his show of affection i do not doubt.
The first sign of what a sweetheart came when he was two or so and our neighbors Calico came to visit us and hunt in our yard. Stevie Nicks was sitting very quietly in the flower garden just watching Lincoln pace back and forth looking for something to do.Suddenly,he stopped dead in his tracks and caught sight of lil stevie. She sat completely still as he sniffed her up and down. And when she had enough of his advances of curiosity, she took her paw and patted him in the nose two or three times and he just....Backed off.
That was the beginning of a very wonderful relationship between a giant and a feline.
Lincoln was the worlds greatest protector a home could ever hope to have.We seldom had visitors after the on friend of ours came in thru the front door un announced and walked shoeless out the back, never asking for his shoes back that day.
"Dont ya want your shoes?" "Naw its okay,He can have Em. Just happy to get out the back in one piece!"
Lincoln Duncan suffered a Stroke overnight and after a long battle with hip displasia and diabetes went in his mom and dads arms at 11:00 am this morning. He was 12 and a Half years of age. We shall miss our Friend and Companion as well as trusted guardian and in the end all the doc sed he could do was prolong the inevitable for maybe a week or two by keeping him in the clinic away from his family. He was Family, hence the inevitable came when needed in the arms of his family.
He Awaits us all at the Rainbow Bridge.
