Today is the day "that stops a Nation". - Our famous Melbourne Cup Day - somehow Victoria has managed to keep the Equine Flu at bay, so our Melbourne Cup can still happen, although without any horses from New South Wales, or Queensland. There are a number of horses from New Zealand, Ireland and Britain also taking part. A friend has gone down to the TAB (Totalisator Board!) and put on a couple of bets for me. It is televised, and everything does stop allover Aussie - people that normally don't have a bet on the races, will have a $1 each way on a horse whose name they like! It's 11AM and the telecast has started already with interviews, tips etc., so had better finish here and go a watch. Some of the outfits worn by the hoy polloy, both male and female, are unbelievable.
