Weighing only about a pound (400 grams), they enter the world toothless and blind. Typically their birth weight is approximately 0.25% of their mother’s weight. They will nurse while mom sleeps until they leave the den together sometime in May. When the cubs leave the den they will still only weigh 5 or 6 pounds. It is a long dangerous path for a one-pound newborn to become a large 500-800 pound adult bear. |
