Being from the era of no girls, I'm kind of currious as to how a mixed sex school worked ...

This is how I remember it ?

In 1986-ish the Head decided to poll the School about whether the pupil populous would be keen to take **GIRLS** into our hallowed green halls.

Oddly the School was more divided about this than most would probably initially suppose.

Anyway, the poll was more-or-less a farce, as the Head had no plans to honor the results of the bogus ballot - being motivated by fiscal concerns (the decline in the number of male boarders meant that taking girls had become unavoidable, and then later Day pupils were even taken, although after my departure I must confess).

In many ways the running of the school really didn't change that much as the intake of girls was rather modest at the start - in fact by the time I left in the 5th Form we had about 7 or so girls in our year (over a 4 year stint).

This probably aided us a little after we left the school, but not that much, as (and I speak for all here if I may) we were still a little bemused by what exactly a girl was ?. I guess we were a little better of than some Years - the Year above us (1989) had 2 girls (Sam and Liz) and I think my brother's Year (1988) had Sandra Scott sister in it for a while and Rick's Year (1987) had none I think.

I have to admit the tone of the school did change a bit, with the intake of the fairer sex - what with people vying over the attentions of the few girls that did exist, rather than worrying who was the best footie player or what was the best way to acquire extra toast a breakie. It must have been a little different for the people in the lower years who had a nearly 50:50 boy to girl ratio I guess.

As for the actual mechanics of the school. The 3rd years were evicted from the Stable Block (and place in the "Upper Corridor") and the Juniors girls place in the Stable Block - i.e. as far away from us filthy lot as possible. The 4-5th Year girls were placed in the Patio Block (the 5th Year now place in the Sports Hall Block). I remember (in the first few weeks) some of the residents in Chapel Dorm claiming to get a eager eyeful from inefficiently drawn curtains as the senior girls changed !!!! Although I suspect more was gleaned about female anatomy from the publications of "Raymond Remmybar" (he had a name something like that anyway).

Apart from the living requirements the school was for the most part totally mixed, i.e. no segregation with regard to class or meals or social time.

Hope this gives a little insight into the situation.

Mike

In September 1986 13 girls joined. One 3rd Year, One 2nd Year, most of the rest were subs'.

The Dry-rot room was a much better place for viewing the Patio block ..... ! (allegedly)

The publications were Raymond Reviewbar or at least thats what they said on the back cover - apparently !

Jessica mountjoy (member) should put her views up here

I was in the first intake of girls in Sep 1986 (a ratio of 13 girls to 250 lads!), and served the full sentence up to the 5th year. I remember the first assembly, all the girls had chairs around the edge where the teachers sat; we also got priority in the dinner queues and could get away with anything for at least the first week until the lads cottened on to our special treatment!
However, in later years we still got the same log shifting detentions, but fortunately we never got the cane!

Lauren,

You most know my sis then - especially if you were a sub as one of those first 13 - Virginie 'Veg' W-W and Andrea Gibson,

Sadly much trying has so far failed to convince her or Andrea to join.

well don't beat yourself up about it too much!!! I remember it being
exciting and then they all turned up in their little green and white dresses
that they were forced to wear. Then they got priority for everything,
sports became broken up and that was it really.

I wonder what it would have been like if they had never turned up. I guess
they were there for 2 years before I left so that was just enough time to
find out a little about them.....if you know what I mean !!!

I didn't get where I am today by having girls muck up my education.

I think there would have been more emphasis on sport/footie skills and less on haircuts/dressing up  ...

Also I suspect there might have been more sneaking off into bridgwater girl-seeking/drinking .. there might have been more trouble as a result  ?????

etc ...
