Can anybody recall any of those words used at Quantock but hardly ever - it at all - heard elsewhere? I have thought of a few -perhaps we could combine to create a glossary of some kind...? e.g... ---------------------------------------------------- Jub - Junior underprivileged brat - usually directed at the 0's and 00's as a general rule, but it was also applied to anyone younger, smaller and less powerful than you. Scuds - underpants. Though I wonder what happened during the Gulf War and Saddam's use of poor-quality ex-Soviet missiles...? Anyone remember any more? And did any of these terms die out/remain? And were there any newer (that is for me post-1987) terms...? ---------------------------------------------------- nb The orginal "Quantock Colloquialisms" was getting quite big and thus taking too long to down load, hence... the creations of this new list of "Quantock Colloquialisms".

Just a little add on to the above message ?

When I say Nick Russell has been caught in mid-action - what I really mean is that he seems to already have given the tap, and is now in concealment mode ?it can also be seen in the photo that Nick Russell's "antipodal tap", has received critical acclaim form the a Jub situated directly behind him ( to the right a bit) who is thrilled to see a true master in action.

Since my link to this photo has failed - this photo can be found in the "Group School Photo" album - photo 1990.

PPS for those of you not from our Year, Nick Russell is in the third row of white shirts (from the bottom) on the far right hand side.

After many such taps - both traditional far shoulder and stealth near shoulder taps I devised the ultimate decloaking methodology.

I looked straight behind by tipping my head backwards - thus enabling visual surveillance of both attckable flanks at the same time.

This had the advantage of removing the requirement to check in both directions and also covered the possibilities of the attacker moving to evade detection (ie having tapped a shoulder moving behind the shoulder checked first or dodging away !)

A worthy response to said shoulder percussions, although it would seem that you left yourself open to the ultimate of "spamming" opportunities - I preferred the covert look downward to see which side the perpetrator's shoes lay on before turning my head leftward or rightwise

Marcus reminded me of this one in one of his postings:

' CLINKER '

I've asked around a bit and it seems nobody else knows what I'm talking about so I'm sure it counts ...

Oh yes ...
1) "CLINKER ... a custy forge residue"
2) "CLINKER ... better not talked about crusty contents of a an inexpertly wiped botty"

Mike

The best thing to do was to wait until you got huge 'Clinker' build up and then remove with a pair of 'Clinker Tongs'.  Sometimes it was a little difficult to get it out.  Once out it was quite soft until it was placed in the water 'but'.

I am talking about forging of course !!

Was once asked if I grifted my grifter - when I was about 10! I've never quite been the same since!

Hi Andrea,

Laurie,

I think you'll find Andrea is in the foreground (in pink), and as for "beer glasses" ....   well, I'm not sure we should tolerate that kind of filth on this web site !! !

Laurie,

That is Virgine Whiteway-Wilkinson sister of William and Ben - all of who spent some time at Quantock.  I think the picture was taken at the little reunion we had in London last year.

I also heard a story realating to the 'Gift Giver' stuff and apparently a person who knowingly gives HIV to a willing recipient is called a Gift Giver.  However that is in America and a practice performed by young homosexuals you do not feel complete unless they have HIV,  so I guess that is NOT want Andrea meant !!

Marcus.
