Bit late for the contest - especially as the answer is now up !
However I thought the school was Lord Tauntons summer house. I am sure that is what I was told at some stage when I was there. I know it was used as a TB hospital in the 50s or so.
Marcus is mistaken though - unless it was kept quite no pupil was a member of royalty !
By the time I started in Sep 80 the steep overgrown drive on the first left as you come in from the Aley entrance was known as the Old drive - probably on account of it being overgrown and all ! I think I risked driving up there once on a revisit but maybe thats a flase bravado memory !. The drive that went stright up towards the arched gate (second left from Aley entrance) was known as the new drive. the history of the construction of the 'old' drive was unknown to us subs or to later generations as far as I know. it was often used for sledging though using breadbaskets - either on ice/snow in winter or on the moss, roting leaves or slime during the rest of the year.
I recall at least a couple of summer holidays being extended because the school was snowed in. But think that snow only happened on a couple of occaisions. Brilliant when it did though !
