Well, that's weird, Mike, looking back at the pictures of the dorms... I was in Yellow Dorm to start with. Are those bars laying across the lower parts of the windows? Some fellows in my year used to get out and walk along the 2"(?) ledge than ran along the outside of the building just beneath the windows; people like Rhys Williams, Steve Hopkins, Simon Austin and his twin brother Andrew, who made it from Chapel to Yellow Dorm via the outside. I was amazed. Was this a feat performed continuously throughout the years?
I was on the top bunk (8 boys in the dorm then) in that right-hand corner at the back. In my first week I recall we were roused from our beds by a prefect whacking our legs through the blankets with a hefty ruler. Outrageous! I'd never before been bidden from my slumbers in such a fashion. The fellow caught me right on the knee and my reaction was to pull it from his hand and hit him on the forehead. I then ran for the toilet cubicles but, well, didn't quite make it .
I also remember we gathered hundreds of conkers and had  a massive conker fight one evening after lights out. These missiles obviously made a huge din and it wasn't long before Big P had the lights on again. The floor was covered. "Who did this?" he asked. I put my hand up - no-one else did! Amazing! So I was the only one to get caned that night. A salutary lesson in ..er...something.
Anyway, well done with the pics, Mike. I guess I'd better start bracing myself for further psycho/visual shocks in August 2003 (or have you got even more lurid photos?).

Neil,

I do have some more pics but I'm thinking about hosting them off site and have a link due to my budget of file space getting quite lose to being eaten up!!

Yep the bars are new to me too - it is probably a safety issue for kids staying at 'Quantock Lodge' - never requied when 250 pupils stayed though!!

As for the Chaple Dorm to Yellow Dorm outside 'round the world' trip -wow - I'd like to have seen that - bloody hell !!!!

Great job on that, Mike.

Just spent the best part of an hour browsing round it all.

The beer's beginning to kick in, and I'm in "..I really love you, man.." mode, but the site has made me all nostalgic, and some of the pictures brought a lump to my throat.

I really love you all, man.. >sniff<

Thanks Bri,

Glad you liked it. The map is about as good as I remembered it - had a bit of a refresher course when I went back in Nov. Better not let Mrs Bri see you "loving us all",

This looks pretty cool: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/5235724.stm (see below)

We in theory could pool all our Quantock School photos together and generate a virtual Quantock that you can fly around ....
Photos transformed into 3D model
How the system makes its 3D image (Photo Tourism)
Two-dimensional images are converted into 3D models

Technology that transforms digital images into 3D models will be unveiled at a conference on Wednesday.

Microsoft's Photosynth takes collections of images, analyses them for similarities, and then displays them in a reconstructed 3D space.

The system, to be previewed at a computer graphics meeting in Boston, will allow users to walk or fly through a scene to see photos from any angle.

Microsoft says Photosynth should be available for use later this year.

Photo-sharing websites will be early-adopters of this technology
Richard Szeliski

Richard Szeliski, principal researcher at Microsoft Research who developed the technology with Noah Snavely and Steven Seitz, of the University of Washington, said: "The system builds a 3D model just from a raw collection of photographs."

'Geometry problem'

He said the technology works by scanning collections of photographs, which can be taken from different cameras at different times.

It picks out distinctive features in each image and cross-references them against the other photographs, checking for similarities.

This allows it to pinpoint a feature's 3D position and to also calculate where the position of the camera would have been when the picture was taken.

"Then basically, it is just a geometry problem," explained Dr Szeliski.

"You are simultaneously adjusting the position of the camera and where those little pieces of images are until everything basically snaps together."

The system processes collections of photographs

The prototype can use as few as two pictures but, said Dr Szeliski, it becomes a lot more exciting when several dozen images are used.

The 3D model will enable people to move through a scene, looking at pictures from any angle, click on specific photos, zoom in or out of a feature, and see where snaps were taken in relation to other images.

Dr Szeliski said: "I think the photo-sharing websites will be early-adopters of this technology.

"Wherever people share photos, instead of just seeing a gallery of unorganised photos, now you can pull everyone else's photos together and make a rational sense out of it."

The other obvious application, he added, would be for tourism and property, where a city could provide a virtual tour or a hotel could potential visitors walk through its lobby.

The researchers will be presenting a research paper detailing the technology at this week's Siggraph 2006 conference in Boston, which looks at the latest developments in computer graphics and interactive techniques.

Microsoft have said they believe the technology will almost certainly be web-based, and people should be able to run the application later this year.

"Within the next year we hope to see this in wide usage," added Dr Szeliski.

Mike
