Hi Mike,
Glad you liked the photo's of Gerry Warriner. His sense of humour is great. On the action pict he is saying "I don't look 104 years old, no I'm only 103 !!!
I got his permission to put his pictures on the site because he wants to come to the next reunion.
He has also given me the rights to print our 5 hour conversation on the site. Yes he even gave me a note book and pen, God Bless him !!
Some of the lads I have talked to at reunions have been given the "Stick" by Gerry, which I found hard to beleive and to my amazement he cofirmed this and talked about some of the boys he had to punish.
I can understand some ex inmates not wanting Gerry to be at the "Big Reunion" so may  I know now if he is not wanted or do the Lads/Lasse's want him.
I cannot guarantee he will be able to come as he is still recovering but is getting better day by day, as he proved by his phoning me a few days ago.
Laurie
PS
Did you know he was in love with a member of staff

Well I hope Gerry can make it to the Reunion 2004 ... those that got the stick from Gerry seem to wear it as a badge of honour ....(?)

Well, when do we get an extract form your interview with Gerry - !!

Hi Mike/Folks,

Before I start talking about my meeting with Gerry, let’s have a "Speak Gerry" quiz.

1 A large place where convicts come from.

2 A thing that moves about underground with people in it and they can get wet.

3 Toast

4 Round things that you dig up out of the ground and bash them.

5 A place where you take bits of paper and the man bashes them.

Your Answers to be posted to this site by Monday of next week.

Punishment:-

I asked Gerry about him giving the stick to boys, as I found it very hard to believe he ever did this.

He confirmed that he did do this at the orders from David Peaster. He is against corporal punishment, and has always hated the idea. Only once did he feel justified in caning a boy and he admits it was the only time he felt it worked. The boy was always rude and disobeyed all the staff . After the punishment the boy became well behaved and enjoyed being helpful to others. Gerry did tell me the boys name but I feel it should be left unsaid.

The amazing kidnap incident:-

Quantock had a boy kidnapped by one of his parents, leaving the real guardian very upset and took Mr Peaster to court over it.

Peaster put in a counter claim for unpaid school fees !!!

The judge ruled in favour of the parent on the grounds she didn’t have her boy returned by Peaster also why should she pay fees for someone who isn’t there.

Fingers in bake bean tin shock horror :-

Gerry remembers the boy falling off a fire escape while trying not to get caught smoking, as he fell/slipped he lost some fingers and was rushed to hospital. Gerry denies putting the fingers in a bake bean tin and running after the ambulance with it. The fingers were packed with ice but the hospital couldn’t do anything. Gerry likes the bake bean tin version better !!!

Love at Quantock:-

Gerry was in love with a married member of staff, she came from Bridgwater. Name withheld by me to protect the guilty.

Sending your child to boarding school :-

Gerry, if he had any children, would never have sent them to boarding school. He thinks it’s very unnatural and should be a sort of last resort. IE Parents dead, military commitments etc.

This is just part of a 5 hour "chat" with Gerry. Hopefully at the Big Reunion you can all talk over "Old Times" with him.

Laurie

With my understanding of Gerry Logic, here are my Answers:

1. Australia
2.  I think you already told me this one, so I'll stay stummm
3. Money ... e.g. "bread" ...?
4. Spudz
5. Post Office

It was interesting what Gerry had to say about boarding schools being a 'place of last resort' ....and them being very unnatural - an apt description of QS !!??

Did DP have to make any payments on the court case - I'm not sure what fine you get on loosing a kid to a kidnapper who was given into your charge?

I know Gerry has problems with words, but he seems to still have a quite good memory for incidents that happened way back when

Did you ask him about dispatching a squirrel with a hair brush?

Mike

.... Yep the little bugger obviously showed signs of life (sqeak ..) and got a good clobbering .... hopefully not while Gerry was still wearing it .... hrmmm maybe this would account nicely for some of the difficulties with words ??

Come on chaps we need an answer to :-
2 A thing that moves about underground with people in it and they can get wet.
3 Toast

Re sending boys to boarding school:-
Gerry taught at a very good boarding school near London before moving to Quantock. At his old school he was there with Peter Burgess, where he had to stop Peter from getting into trouble.
Burgess applied to work at Cotham High School without Gerry knowing about it, and Burgess used Gerry as a sort of reference. Peaster never told Gerry  that Burgess had applied for a job.
Gerry was shocked when Burgess turned up at Quantock.

I'm not sure what the fine/punishment was for mislaying a pupil from a school, as money has no meaning to Gerry. He can't tell the differance between 50p or £50.

Gerry does remember the squirrel attack and reenacted it again for my benifit. Lucky Alison, my wife was safely at home. I don't think she could had taken it all over again.

I was talking to Matron a few weeks ago and she saw Gerry crossing a road. She wanted to know if he was wearing a skunk or a wig !!!
Bye for now
Laurie
