Do you remember Mr James (I think I have the name correct) he was Big "P"s other brother and lived next to Phil, he died in about 73/74.  He was a really nice guy and used to take archery which I was always involved with.  The one thing I remember about him was his claim to have shot holes in the weather vein about the guard tower with a 22 live from the gardne outside his house.  That is some shooting. The holes are certainly there and anyone going back should look out for them and please post a note confirming this.

Yes Nick, I remember there being a 'Mr Keith' as well as a 'Mr Phil'. Don't remember a 'Mr James' though?

I know one of "Big P's" brothers used to take PE, including the cross-country runs.

One day he took us down to where the summer camp is, and told us to run up a very steep incline (roundabout where the "e" is in "Quantock Combe" on this map; http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?grid2map?X=317500&Y=137500&zoom=3 ) you can see the contours!

There are plenty of tales to tell about that summer camp as well.

Big Phil often used to supervise cross-countries. The steep hill sounds (and looking at the map - looks like) the hill that ran up next to Greatwood Camp and as such was known as Greatwood hill. The more junior years used to have to run up here as part of the run, whilst the older years carried on to Severn Wells which is the 'Y' junction aa bit furtehr down the road from Greatwood camp and near the 'o' of Combe in your map.

Greatwood hill didn't have a path or anything and was covered in needles. Severn Wells hill had a rocky 'path but was both longer and steeper thanb Greatwood hill

Nick, I just remember that usually cross-country runs ended by coming across the field to the front and right of the school, most of us had walked most of the way but we had to show an effort on the last stint !

Yep, definitely Mr Keith. He used  to take a load of us swimming on Fridays to some community baths in Taunton. Does anyone remember this?

Jeez, I think I do. Wasn't it some really tiny swimming pool, really ancient thing with like a kind of Edwardian balcony thing that ran around the perimeter? Lots of iron poles holding the damned thing up. Just right for smacking yourself into because you were running on a wet surface that was designed in an age when swimmers wore huge bathing cozzies and never ran anywhere...

Swimming at Taunto was a Saturday (or Sunday ?) club that was still happening in the 80's.

Someone did a back flip one time and all but brained themselves on the side.

Running in the pool - no one has ever done that have they ?!!  Your descrition sounds about right of it.

The accident seems to have damaged the part of your brain that controls typing/spelling/grammar...
