In the field to the right, as you looked out from the front of the school, on a pleasant summer evening, Big P used to hit golf balls from the top of the hill. At the bottom of the hill would be a herd of jubs, all with buckets, attempting to catch the balls! At the time, I used to think this was brilliant, especially as you got some money (a shilling?) if you caught a golf ball in your bucket. Reflecting on this activity, and as a parent now, I'm not sure that I would be too understanding on hearing that my child had suffered multiple injuries due to golf ball impact.

My brother Mike also reminded me of the time that he and his chums used to go fishing - from History dorm! They used to hook the Koi carp that were in the pond below. They also used to shoot the bull in the field opposite with an air rifle. And they used telescopic sights to hit it in the nuts.

Anyone remember all of this?

Tony

Tony,

I also remember the golf. Big P used to do it by the stone steps also with his chipper and I remember us catching them by hand them which was even more dangerous but as you say great fun especially when you made a few bob.

The other way we made money out of Big P was collecting blackberries. We would pick a whole bucket full which took forever.  i think he used them to make the school jam.

I remember Big P was toying with the idea of a golf course but could never get the neighbouring farmers to comply with his mania.  I remember  catching the odd one and on one occassion irritating him at which point he rained us with balls, smashing.  He used to have a lad called Tug (Wilson?) with him as a caddie who fancied himself a golfer.

As for blackberrying, does anyone remeber that in the run up to Xmas we used to 'borrow' laundry hampers and fill them with chesnuts from a copse on the way to the Gatehouse where Holmes used to live.  I seem to remember it was very lucrative, sponsored by fruit and veg man in Bridgie.

I was actually hit on the back by one of Peasters golf balls - not very pleasant at all!
