Looking at the photo (Link) of the Stable Block (later to become the Junior Girls Block) I noticed a the little low wall - or rather stone verge - that border the section of grass between the road and the Girl's Block.

Seeing this series of irregular stones reminded me about the many vain attempts, I made to traverse its length to and from class in the new teaching block. I made it only once! Traditionally people would nudge you as they past, just enough to make your life difficult but not really enough to bole you over completely. I think only one section was the real change - quite near the top of the road were in began to bend - a series of very pointy and irregular stones.

I only spent one night in the Stable Block (as it was then) in my 1st Year, when I was allowed by Bungle to over-night with my brother who was in his 3rd Form. To my knowledge the lower level was never used to house pupils was this always the case ?

Does anyone remember when the Stable Block was built and was it always used to house the 3rd Year that is before  it was given over to the Girls?

Mike

The Stable Block as I and AB-N knew it,was semi derelict.

Certainly up to 1970 no work had taken place. The old stable block was
approached on the way to Philip's house - I believe it became the Science
block and girls dorms. Up to '70 it was a quadrangle with garages behind two
large doors (also where the Karts were kept). To the right were derelict
stables and the Dovecote. Beside the Dovecote on the right through an arch
was a cottage that overlooked what became the playing field - this was
occupied by teaching staff and in '70 became 6th form dorms. Above the
garages became classrooms in 1970.

Going up the road past the stables towards Philip's house there was one side
of the quadrangle which was another cottage (just before the 90 degree right
turn) which was occupied by teaching staff. The rest was stables where
mainly bales of straw were stored and the upper floors were derelict.

Between that block and the drive was a small paddock where we had Nov 5th
bonfires and a trials bike track - this seems to have been built on with an
entirely new block

So, the work started after 1970 - does that help?
