Sometimes I find myself wondering: Is "IT" still there?
Obviously I don’t mean the School, as we know it is still there - maybe not as a working School but certainly as a series of buildings. As far as I can tell the ‘School?more or less still exist in cyber-space i.e. HERE, now as I type (ok sorry enough philosophy ?). What I was getting at was .... have you ever done something at the school and still wonder if “it is still there?- a secret stash of exotic 1970's art-pamphlets or crafty carved your name somewhere you shouldn’t ??? Before I left the school I left a my name on top of Mr Brooks chalk board - being back at the school now a few time I realise that Mr Brooks old English room is now Duncan’s flat so I suppose my chalky name is no more - although I did find my Quantock nick-name still written in an old locker. Also I remember Dicky-B and Nick Russell and I set up an camp near Ring-wood I wonder if that is still there - It should be pretty obvious if not well hidden - we marked our tuff with a stags head on a pole ......... I’m sure one day it will scare the life out of a wayward trekker or unfortunate lumberjack - who knows maybe next time I'm back at the School (this years summer reunion I suppose) I'll have a look Mike |

That photo looks familiar.....though I didn't mind doing the washing up instead. We got into quite a routine of chucking it all into hot soapy water and into the boiling clean water to rinse and hung to dry (which took 2 minutes). All the cutlery went in together, we then shook it all around for a minute and they all came out sparkling. Those were the days! Wonder what Dean is up to these days too. I see he hasn't quite made it with the internet age yet. Hope he hasn't changed too much as it would be nice to see him again. Nathan do you remember when I had my stereo recording us all in our dorm (G4) and we were doing swearing on the periodic table.........I still have the tape and it has me in stitches every time, especially with Dean's outbursts!!!!!! |

Hi Justin, To be honest I cannot remeber that 'incident' at all. Needless to say I am also pleased that a certain Doc Rog obviously did'nt hear us as I am confident I would remember the event as it was yesterday !! Is there anyway you can convert to a avi file or something ? Would be great to put it on the site or you could email it to me. I'm amazed that you actually still have that sort of stuff.........you must be a hoarder ! I also remeber that there was a very specific routine to getting the washing up done efficiently and yes it did involve using many gallons of hot water that was just below scolding temperature ! Maybe we can track Dean et al for the next reunion ? S'laters, Nathan |

Now that takes me back—amongst other various entrepreneurial
earning ideas—washing up-not the mundane plates and cups but the cutlery…..i recall a waiting list.Anyway,
can any one remember the wages? All
I know is that it financed a whole summer holiday.I
saved and saved and boy did I save----never learnt that valuable lesson
though-maybe I ought to get back to basics…anyone want to buy asst vinyls £5 each---still that’s another story!!!

Hi Nathan,
When I was washing up in 1976/77 for the princely
wages of 50p a week, we found the best way to degrease and unstick the cooking
pots and baking trays, was to soak them with Quantock tea from the big old
aluminium tea pots.

Dredging
my memory-I think I got nearly £2.50 a week- and yes the method I remember was “nearly”scalding water to rinse with---it would be
interesting to know when or if the pupils stopped washing up and the going rate
then- Dave

I think I was being paid about £2 a week to do the job. Although the head would not pay us weekly and after about two weeks of it I got fed up with it and gave up and never received payments for services rendered ! More fool me I 'spose......but I learnt a lesson there as well ! I am amazed that anyone could fund a summer holiday from Quantock wages.....I take my hat off to you David ! Cheers, Nathan |

I will try to get the tape sorted and email it to you Nathan. It doesn't surprise me that those alu tea pots, trays and other cooking utensils were older than us. They sure stood the test of time even though they were chipped and dented into custom shapes. Do you remember the two dinner ladies, Claire and Sandra. I met Sandra at the last reunion and she is doing well. Claire was the bubbly one who did more smiling than talking. Sadly she passed away a few years ago. |

Dave Must have been an extravagant holiday if it was funded from washing up money !! I don't envy you. Justin, I remember those pots being new !!! Well new to us,the head bought a job lot at a auction with a load of spades. All financed by selling the X-Ray machine we found on the ground floor. Laurie |

The only new things we were treated to was the new kitchen and swimming pool. The old kitchen got to such dire straits that i don't think it was very safe to cook anything. The pool took longer than antisipated as Doug's plans hit a dead end with regards to the pipework (the pics are under school buildings i think?). The head did get a "99" ice cream maker but never used it (thinks the ingredients were unobtainable or too expensive?). Even the new mini bus was several years old but it was better than the transit vans we had to travel in. His Range Rover was cool. His Bristol was fired up on occasion and we did get a ride in it once. Wonder where its gone..........it would be a collectors item and a half! |

Swimming pool !!, all we got new was a maths block, gym (where we eat reunion breakies)and my wife promptly broke one of the glass panes when she first saw the place, oh never did thank Mr Crockett for picking up the tab on that one... Nick, |

We were promised a swimming pool in 1964, so how long did it take for someone to dig the hole ? The canteen/ maths block was a wooden hut with a snooker table and coal fire. Infact the warmest place at Quantock. I think it great that Mr. Crockett came to your future wifes aid. Laurie |

It didn't take them too long to dig the hole out once Duncan got on the digger.......! It took a while to get things settled after completion though as the machinery couldn't maintain the correct chlorine levels at first. There was a "haze" above the water for a week as everyone scratched their heads, trying to work it out. I'm surprised the pool has lasted as long as it had because nobody knew what to do when things went wrong. After the all clear from the haze problem they started letting us in (as guinea pigs) and there were numerous problems with us coming out of the pool with swollen eyeballs!!!! Got sorted in the end though......... |

Did they ever do anything with all the extra rooms the swimming pool had ? The head was always going to put a games room in that was in the big room at the top. I know Mr Griffiths lived in a room at the back which must have been pleasant with all the noise from the pumps next door ! The last I remember about the extra room was the head storing a job lot (prob ex RAF) of furniture just in case the school head count increased to 600 without warning ! Nathan. |

I remember the guff he stored in there. Isn't there fitness equipment in there now that may have gone in there ages ago. We know that the sports hall extension has gear like that in there now and the rooms above there were for the staff accomodation. Mr Griffiths eh......I kept in touch with him for ages and he still sends me a christmas card every year (with the exception of last year). I did have an address for him somewhere. He used to go round and wake us all up in the mornings...."Hubba hubba fella" and all that........ |
