I just wondered what people remembered of the various school plays that where put on at Quantock. Mr Yates (aka Beaky) was a true master, I remember a play I think it was called "the 5th Phantom", I believed penned by Mr Yates. The main actor involved where Mike Moffat and Adrain Norton. Near the end a fire cracker was dropped into a metal bin just as the lights were cut, making a noise that nearly had to change me trousers. I was in 'The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui" which I played a few minor roles - anyone remember it we were basically gangsters ... anyone else

I'd take a guess that the RAF play was "Chips With Everything" which I think was by Arnold Wesker or something like that.
Holmes had a thing about that one for some reason. |

Could well have been-but my memory isn’t that
good-although I do remember in rehearsals that at the end we had to “collapse on a table” and you’ve
guessed it the table collapsed as well-we all thought we should rig it for the
actual performance but even then the creeping health and safety(I presume)put
paid to that----or was it that what amused 15 yr old lads made Mr Holmes
cringe---incidentally did they continue to put plays on in the chapel in later
years or in the gym-I suppose if the drama got serious the chapel was too
small-shame if that was the case!!

I believe that the first play put on in the sports hall was "Oliver" in 1992 (I think), before that we used the drama hall (formerly the chapel - I think from what I remember of the on-going discussion!!). After "Oliver" I think the productions got a bit large-scale for the drama hall. |

Bri, indeed, I do recall our comical drama session in the Gym, it was great fun to help organise and put on and in fact, it must have had a greater influence on me that I could have imagined because I am very heavily involved in stage managing Am Dram group productions, co-producing a large Gang Show and am about to appear as one of the Brothers in a local version of Joseph and the amazing technicolour dreamcoat. It is just a shame my sojourn at Q was so short, all the good drama happened after I left. ( Hmm, is that telling me something !!! :-) ) |

When Mr Yates was the drama teacher (?? to 1987), the plays were held in the atmospheric confines of what was the very original Chapel (not the best picture but see link) the one with the hidden stain glass window (see link). I think the chapel you are refering to might be the little-gym which is now the dining room !! The original Chapel made for a good venue as it was quite atmospheric, dark if needed, and had a few exits for back stage access. Mike PS Caz - They probably had to make you the 'mum' or else the cast might not be safe ... PSS You remember any of your former Monty Python-esk routine? |

Mike
Any memory I had for anything has long been shot by age and years and years of my partiality to Shepherd Neame "Spitfire" ale..
The only bit I do remember was where the newsreader was reading a story about an escaped lion.. I was hiding under the newscaster's desk doing sound effects and special effects and at this point I had to flick a lion's tail out from underneath and move it about like an angry cat flicking it's tail. We didn't actually have a lion's tail, so it was a rolled-up beige bath towel which we'd frayed at the ends..
Adrian C played the part of the newsreader, if I recall..
You remember anything, Adrian?

Bri, from my dim recollections, I do recall I was the newsreader and I remember doing a 'cod war' item where someone then threw a fishing net over to my left where we had created a partition out of blankets, ( if I recall correctly ) and where most of the props lived, I vaguely recall the Lion sketch ...... |

It's good to hear from Bri again. I was beginning to think that he had fallen off the planet, or is it just too much Spitfire? Nick |

Sorry - didn't mean to go away.. Just been a really, really busy year. Mostly work.. :-(
Sadly, despite my best efforts to look for employment nearer the Westcountry, there doesn't seem to be much demand for aging piss-head IBM mainframe systems people down that neck of the woods.
Bummer, as my current employer is closing the Hertfordshire office and taking it all up to their other office in South Yorkshire. So, sometime in the next six months me and Mrs Bri, Little Miss Bri and Little Master Bri are heading oop North - Sheffield, to be precise, though we're trying to base ourselves in The Peak District somewhere commutable.
I really ought to make the effort to get to one of these reunion things before then..

Sheffield........isn't that "Full Monty" country? Beware what they ask you to do Bri. Nick. |

I heard rumours that Sheffield was quite a nice place .... something about some ancient royal degree that meant that no trees could be cut down in the city so the place is quite pretty - doesn't fit with the whole "Full Monty" image of Sheffield - could have it all wrong!! |

Mick, I have a photo from this Play which you might be interested in - at the moment it is stashed in Wales but if you are interested I'll try and scan and post it on the web site the next time I go home. If you like it, Matron allows me to sell these photos to those that are interested to raise money to repair the school. I always thought you go into acting acter school ... did you? Mike |
