My brother reminded me about Christmas dinner at Quantock:

In the mid 80's till at least 90 the Christmas dinner was served by the 5th form to all the Jubs!!

Sounds like a nice tradition but I wonder how far back it goes?

My brother also went on to say that the 5th form also had to sing Carols to all the jubs??? I can't remember that bit !!!! Anyone else remember that?

I'm not sure if the 5th form got to eat before the Jubs or after (by the looks of the table, maybe before)... but it seems that they got to drink Top-Deck Shandy as their treat!!

In the above photo can be seen the Class of 88, with Mrs Procter and Mr David Coulson

In the 60's, Xmas dinner was served to us by the teachers.
Plus Peaster put money (6d bits) in the Xmas pudding.
Why didn't we get "Top Deck" shandy.
You lucky B*ggers !!!

Sounds like it was a pretty short lived tradition - if you can call a tradition short lived!

Maybe Mrs Proctor found out about the old days when teachers did the serving and got teh 5th Form to do it instead?

Hi Mike,

Yep a good move getting senior boys to do the serving.

Just imagine Mr.Phil and the Head serving us plebs with food.

Still Top Deck shandy is a big improvement.
Has any one ever got drunk on the stuff ?
I tried for days with no effect.

Laurie

I think Top-Deck had about 0.1% alcohol so it is no suprise that you did not get drunk........sounds like you were desperate !  When we wanted to get drunk we got Richard Longhurst to go to the farm shop near Nether Stowey. A, he looked older than the rest of us an B, he had a moped top get there and carry the goods back without the worry of getting caught by the beady eyes of Doc Rog or alike.  He came back with a load of mintures once and we sat there trying to pretend that we like the taste of Bells and Archers.....a taste to this day I still cant stand !

Going back to the Xmas dinner I remember getting served byu the 5th formers but dont remember the carols.  I dont even think that tradition lasted when I got the 5th year....saying that it couls also be my memory !

I remember the 5th years serving at Christmas...was always quite a good laugh (mainly cos I never got to 5th year at Quantock), I think it did carry on for a little while, but not sure how many years I was served...I think it went on til '92 or '93 at the earliest.
