-- Quantock Memories in a Nut-shell --

 "I remember ... "

A recent email gave me this idea for a stream of consciousness about Quantock. The  idea is to trigger memories about Quantock, be they random, important, trivial, mundane or zany. What might be an 'old-hat' memory for one, might trigger a profound memory in an other - i.e. let see if we have glossed over any thing that is still lurking in peoples memories.

Simple rules:
  • Write a short-ish sentence about a memory about Quantock, be it trivial or not.
  • "I remember ... " - start the sentence with the phrase.

That's it ....

I start one - I remember the hot-spots on the storage heaters that you could fry an egg on .."

your turn ....

I remember slaveing away for matron, doing hours of hard labour on the farm (cleaning up shit, getting trampled by sheep and running a risk of getting spiked by a highland's horns), for a drifter and a can of apple tango.... By the way in my day flemming won a sports day or 2 (not many though!!!!).

Hehe I remember the farm, I remember being instructed to herd the Highland cows, and being told that if you waved your arms and shouted "away" they would obey. Hard to believe in that when they are trampling towards you at breakneck speed (for a cow), with all nasty sharp pointy bits coming in your direction.

I remember the sheep, and I also remember that some sheep had coloured marks on their back, and one or two sheep had a coloured block strapped to its belly, I tell you, nothing was the same after that revelation.

As soon as I had posted the message I knew I had ask for it.
Like at the reunion I asked where the hot water came from and Justy said "Out of the taps"

I was of course referring to hot water available at the reunions, as I couldn't remember hot water for washing up in the 60's.

I remember being in big dorm and always wanting to be in the smaller Dorms.
I remember the junior common room with a smaller snooker table with a rip on one corner by a pocket. You only had to aim for that and the ball always went in.
I remember Bug-fights, races across the lockers in big dorm.
I remember the fire alarm going off at night, I could only find my shoes as opposed to slippers, and then getting the cane for being too loud walking down the corridor towards the 'Flat'.
I remember standing for ages outside the flat with my hands on my head waiting for Mr P to get back from his rounds to give me the cane.
I remember room inspections by Mr Phil every morning before breakfast.
I remember being allowed into the senior common room by the tuckshop whilst the seniors were in prep.
I remember Mr Phil finding a No 2 on the floor in the toilets ( where they used to store all the trunks ) and gathering all of that wing and grilling us who did it. No one fessed up so every eve, instead of telly we had to go and play sockball in the gym ( small one by the patio) or out on the playing field for other games. No one ever fessed so this went on for at least one term.
I remember cleaning out the fountain and getting it working.
I remember a nice old guy called Jim ( might have been a clergy man?)
I remember the golf course ( 3 holes at least ) out on the fields in front of the main house, you could borrow some clubs and a ball form a bag by the front door.
I remember the Bridgwater trips in the mini bus, where we used to go and buy space dust. I also remember the time of the petrol shortage where we seemed to spend hours driving round all the garages, queuing and then getting the ration of petrol.
I remember skate boarding lots.
I remember getting caught cheating at the cross country run and coming in ahead of the PE teacher, our flaw in our plan.

I wasn't by myself with regards to the fountain lol. Lots of boys were involved and previous to that it was full of rubbish and weeds.

Good old sock-ball in the little gym (was also the 'chapel' and now is the new dinning room).

Yes I remember Jim too, I believe he would trade sweets for stamps. Not too sure who he was or why he was even really allowed on the premises ...
