A few of us went drinking in Bridgwater, but a number of us somehow got caught by the police and taken back to school.  I wasn't actually caught myself but somehow Pester/Warinner knew I was involved when I got back to school.

Any one remember this?

Andy,
Truly excellent to hear from you. The trousers were called 'Oxford Bags', and yes they were banned by Big P. I hope that some reunion can be arranged as that will be one hell of a blast.
Take care,
Nick.

I remember making the road and have mentioned it somewhere else on this site in another string. This was after the exams that summer and we all worked hard humping tar down the drive to Phil who was rolling it in, we all enjoyed it and made some money from Big P.

The shop round the corner from Spar was known (well nicknamed) as 2000AD because of its chaotic layout. I have vague recollections of it being a popular place to nick the odd item from. I think it was also popular with the covert chimney posse as it had a vending machine outside where you could get packs of fags from without being monitored or having to answer to any adults.

I remember the shoplifting in Bridgewater it was the class of 86
Fortunately for me and a another we travelled on our bikes into town and didnt take the free minibus provided.
I heard the police screaming through the town although not as loud as Mr P when called down the station.
The boys were hurled against the wall and thrifted by the police and the variety of findings were astonishing.
Iwatched from afar as the 15 boys were loaded in the black maria with their hands on the seats in front of them and driven away. The look of shame i will never forget on those faces, i think we all thought we were untouchable .A hard lesson learnt the hard way.
You were true friends back then thanks

Hello Big Kev and welcome to the site. We don't get that many from the 70's, however, I don't remember a Kevin Strachan. I left in 75 so perhaps we just missed each other. Are you in any of the school photos on the site?

I have been trying to get in touch with Brett Gregson for a while.  Are you in touch with his brother Mark? Last I heard Bret was working in Swindon in a windsurfing and skiing shop called Westsports but I think they have now closed.

Hello Sean,

Looking at your Covent Garden pics, havn't you, Ant Neale and Brian Perryman changed !! no big hair do's, kipper ties and oxford bags (Mr P's Floaters!).

I was dumped/interned at Quantock in Sept 73 and left in June 78, I was in the same year as Mark Gregson, Michael Neale, Neil Fletcher, Kevin Henman and Paul Linfield.

My first mug shot appeared in the 1974 school photo, I am at D20, you are at B3.
1975 photo, I am at D28 between Mark Gregson and Paul Linfield, you are at B24.

Only found this site last week, have spoken to Kev Henman and Paul Linfield so far.

Look forward to seeing every one at 2003 reunion.

regards

Kev Strachan

Hi there,

I can faintly remember being caught Shoplifting, in Bridgewater too.

I´m not queit sure which year it was, probably 1977, but I will never forget the Date....the 5th of November.....Bonfirenight.

I wasn´t alone (thats what they all say..ha ha) but don´t remember who was caught with me, fishingtackel was what we got caught with.

We spent virtually the whole night in the Cop-Shop, as Big-P, refused to pick us up. He did eventually, after the "party" was over

(mmmmmm, Ì´ll never forget the Gingerbread)

Anyone else remember walking down to Hawkridge resevoir at night, to catch those lovely trout from the bridge.

greetings from Germany

Norman

Norman,

You have a fine memory !  I remember the Bridgewater trips - what a pleasant place !  I recall having to get a pass (called an 'exat' or something, approved by a prefect or Mr Warriner) and catch the minibus into town.   Often used to miss the bus back (no one seemed to care!) and hitch-hike back to school.

I recall the shoplifting incident you were caught up in - wasn't it fishing tackle from Woolies ?!  I don't think it was me who was caught, though I was guilty of knicking the odd fishing float !

I also remember those early morning fishing trips to Hawkridge Resevoir...climbing down the drainpipe out of the dorm to escape (vividly recall that when I look at the photo's...can't remember the dorm/wing name though - along the corridor from Warriner's TV room, above the dining room).  We used to catch some fine trout - I remember Nick Firrell actually breaking the resevoir record with a fine 5lb plus specimen...totally illegally of course !

I have just joined this group and have been busy reading some of the old stories.  My Quantock memories have never been too far away, probably because they were mostly good.  It was a truly unique experience !

Good to make contact with you again Norman!

Regards, Mike (Mouse).

Hello Mike,

I have recently joined the sight and have been busy reading the messages and tales. I remember legging it with Nick Firrell from the baliff at Hawkridge and Mrs Taphouse making some excellent potted trout from the catches. Also remember being pissed off, borrowing a push bike and cycling into Bridgewater without a pass or permission and ended up with 4 weekends detention, working in the gardens. I have mixed memories of Quantock, mainly good one's, I think one could call it character building. Have spoken with Kev Henman and Paul Linfield. It's good to make contact with old friends.
Hope to see you at the 2003 reunion.

Kev,

Great to hear from you!  Like you, I've only just signed up to this site - the internet is a wonderful thing - the memories come flooding back, especially when you look at the school photo's.

I remember that day...frightened the life out of me!  I can even remember the bailiff's nickname - 'what-dy-tell-e' as in 'what-dy-tell-e not to fish 'ere'!

Mrs Taphouse....wow!

Do you recall breaking the world sneezing record !!...I think you were well into the hundreds before I lost count and nodded off to sleep!  Did you ever get involved with walking around the ledge from big dorm to the dorm that overlooked the chapel (can't remember the name of it)?

We've got to get together for a beer or two before the re-union.  I'm sure we can get some of the other '70's' guys along.

Regards, Mike

Hi Mike,

Fortunately I don,t sneeze quite so much nowadays, I remember holding the school record for eating 32 soggy fish fingers for breakfast !!.
I did not walk the ledge, being scared of heights, still am today. I believe if memory serves me right
(gets a little faded by 40!!), it was called Chapel Dorm, I was in there with Justin Ball, Paul Linfield,
Adrian Wroe, Martin Kirk and a few others.
Mrs Taphouse - I think, every Quantock boys favourite dream for a couple of years !!!
Excellent idea, it would be great to meet for a beer before the 2003 reunion.

'Cool Hand Kev' !  Bet you couldn't eat 32 fish fingers now !! (I vaguely recall this awesome achievement).

Not too many people from our year have registered yet, but I note Paul Linfield (from the names you mention) has...if you're monitoring the message board Paul, 'hi' and do you remember any of this ?

Check out the mini-reunion being organised by Sean Harvey and Nick Dykes.  Hopefully this will be around the Quantock area around March time, so I fully intend to go along!

Keep in touch Kev - we'll take our dialogue offline to save boring the masses - you can find me at '[email protected]' or '[email protected]'

Regards, Mike.

If this was in 75 it was me John Rose and Ben Crane. We got caught outside the Blue Boar. Ben did a runner but was rugby tackled. Boy was I in the shit when I got back to school.
