Transforming the man from a state of earthly leaden bondage into one of golden spirituality has been the work of many alchemists. The alchemists refer to this process simply as â€˜the Great Work�?  The question burns in the mind begging to be answered, "Is it really possible to turn lead into gold?"  

Modern nuclear physics state that turning base metals into gold really is theoretically possible.  However, it far too costly to be viable for such things as building wealth. (The basic financial formula would have to lead to having more money when the project is completed and the gold sold than what you invested to create it.) To change one element into another, the number of protons in the nucleus of each atom would have to be changed.  This could be done by bombarding the nucleus with fast moving particles.  The guys that do this and the equipment, however, do not come cheap!

Of course this brings us to a second question.  If scientists figured out exactly how to fire these particles in such a way as the lead was indeed transformed into gold, would it transform their souls? 

I read some of the scientists works and thoughts.  They do seem to have a very unique perspective and access to dreams and imagination that lets them break through the barriers of what is commonly accepted as current science.  Perhaps they do not focus on specifically creating gold from lead.  They did however immerse themselves in their own great work and have had seemingly magical results!   Some of the results have not only transformed the way they see the world, but the way we view it as well.

This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security.
