Hans-
There is a drug available called "Zetia" that lowers cholesterol by inhibiting it's absorption from food. Since most people are getting oxidised cholesterol from their food do you think this drug might have a potential benefit and little risk? I know Ray Peat is very much against statin drugs, because they actually inhibit its production. |

Well, I've said many times that my main goal is to restore or maintain normal biochemistry, but you're asking about people who eat a lot of oxidized cholesterol, and that's not something I've seen enough evidence on. For example, steaming salmon creates a lot more oxidized cholesterol than other methods, so you'd have to know how much you, specifically, are getting. Moreover, the major problem seems to be that if you eat a PUFA-rich diet, the PUFAs get into the LDL and oxidize it. The vast majority of the cholesterol in your body is made by the liver, so my guess is that only if you diet is very rich in oxidized cholesterol might this drug be good, at least for that, but I'd be concerned about the potential "side effects," since it is new. |
