UPDATE NOVEMBER 23: rehearsal of "When Love Comes To Town" is recorded / there is not enough time to do a proper soundcheck / Hutchence on mind / U2 in Brazil / "Kite" for Hutchence / U2 play surprise gig in London!

"War" tour - november 23, 1983 - U2 perform in Nagoya, Japan.

"The Joshua Tree" tour - november 23, 1987 - U2 perform in Fort Worth, Texas at the Tarrant County Convention Center. The first night's performance of "Bullet The Blue Sky" is one of the best. Bono talks about being in the same room John F. Kennedy spent his last night. Bono comments on TV evangelists, and Miami Vice blurring the point at which fiction and reality meet. That afternoon, U2 meet B.B. King and the rehearsing of "When Love Comes To Town" is recorded. Support on the first night is "The BoDeans."

"LoveTown" tour - november 23, 1989 - U2 perform in Yokohama, Japan at the Sports Arena. U2 now play Japan for the first time in six years--exactly six years. The 747 jet transporting the equipment for the "LoveTown" tour is hit by a flock of seagulls and is forced to make an emergency landing. The equipment only arrives on the afternoon of the concert, only hours before the concert is to begin. The show is hampered by rough sound, as there is not enough time to do a proper soundcheck. The Japanese audience are their usual subdued selves.

U2 wins award at MTV Europe Awards in Paris - november 23, 1995 - All four band members appear on stage at the 1995 MTV Europe Music Awards to accept the award for "Best Group," as voted on by MTV Europe viewers. The event is held in Paris, and U2 is one of many artists who use the show to criticize French President Jacques Chirac for recent nuclear tests conducted underwater in the Pacific Ocean.

"POPMart" tour - november 23, 1997 - San Antonio, TX - Alamodome. It's the first since the death of the band's good friend Michael Hutchence, the lead singer of INXS, two days earlier. Bono discusses his good friend during the opening strains of "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," saying "He was a good friend, and he was one of us. We're thinking about him today." Hutchence's image appears on the video screen as Bono and Edge perform an acoustic duet on "Staring at the Sun." INXS' classic "Never Tear Us Apart" is played over the PA system as the fans exit the stadium.

"ATYCLB" promo tour - november 23, 2000 - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - Globo Studios (Projac) - Beautiful Day, Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of, Elevation, The Ground Beneath Her Feet, Beautiful Day, Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of. U2 performs a mini-concert in front of a small TV audience. Beautiful Day and Elevation are shown three days later on Brazilian TV, as Stuck In A Moment... was a week later
"Elevation" tour - november 23, 2001 - Phoenix, AZ - America West Arena. 'Kite' is dedicated to former INXS singer Michael Hutchence, who died 4 years ago yesterday. 'In God's Country' is played for the first time since October 9, 1989. A female fan gives Bono the lyrics and plays guitar during 'I Shall Be Released'. Gwen Stefani duets with Bono on 'What's Going On.' During 'Walk On,' Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Randy Johnson walks a lap around the heart while carrying the team's recently won World Series trophy.

U2 play surprise gig in London - November 23, 2007 - London - Union Chapel - Band dust off rare track for acoustic show - U2's Bono and The Edge played a surprise gig tonight (November 23) at London's Union Chapel. - Playing as part of Mencap's Little Noise Sessions, the duo surprised the audience with a four song set which included rare track 'Wave Of Sorrow'. The identity of the 'special guests' was shrouded in mystery when introduced by host Jo Whiley as "a new band with a lot of potential...Dave the guitarist is very nervous...If he makes a mistake forgive him, he's new. The singer is very shy." The band opened with 'Zooropa' track 'Stay (Faraway, So Close)' with Bono reading the lyrics off a sheet on a music stand. The singer changed the lyrics: "You can go anywhere/ Miami, New Orleans, London, Belfast and Berlin" to " You can go anywhere/ Miami, New Orleans, Belfast and Islington," which was met by roars of approval from the crowd. After the track finished The Edge said : "I hope you like our new direction." Launching into 'Desire', Bono ad libbed parts of INXS' 'Need You Tonight' into the track. He sang the lyrics "I've got to let you know / You're one of my kind." He started clapping before taking out a harmonica to play on the track's distinctive finish. Bono introduced 'Angel Of Harlem' by saying : "This is our only Christmas song."  After a false start which saw the singer sing the start of 'Like A Rolling Stone' by Bob Dylan over The Edge's riff, the duo continued. At one point Bono said : "Merry Christmas Yoko." When the song finished the pair shook hands. Bono then introduced the next track by saying : "So about 20 years ago we started a tune on 'The Joshua Tree' and yesterday we just finished it. This song is based on the experiences that my lovely wife Ali had in Ethiopia. "You forget that this was the land of the Queen Of Sheeba...I was 25 and it was an extraordinary time to be there...It was an overwhelming experience. "This (song) has never been played before. Just don't tell Larry (Mullen) and Adam (Clayton) we're doing it...Oh Adam's here! This is for you sir." They played 'Wave Of Sorrow' with The Edge playing the keyboards. Bono said : "Thanks for being so generous," and The Edge said : "I hope you didn't notice there were a few mistakes but I was told that was okay...I felt the love." source: NME
