The Edge (David Evans) was born in London, England on August 8, 1961. He was the second of 3 children, between his brother Dick and little sister Jill. Due to a job offer, his Welsh parents Garvin and Gwenda moved the family to Malahide, a suburb of Dublin, when David was about a year old.
At Mount Temple, David, shy and reserved, was a good, well liked student who was planning on entering University and become a doctor or engineer. It was also at Mount Temple that David became interested in piano and guitar.
When his mother bought him an old acoustic guitar, he began to play that regularly. His music teacher encouraged him to go to Larry Mullen's house to audition for the band, as he hadn't seen the now famous note. He has played the lead guitar for U2 ever since.
As the band grew musically, so did David, now known as "the Edge." He has since become very well known as a great guitar player and has won many awards to prove it.
In 1983, The Edge married Aislinn O'Sullivan, whom he had met at a U2 concert. They eventually had 3 daughters, Holly, born in 1985, Arun, born in 1986, and Blue Angel, born in 1989. In 1990, he and Aislinn separated and were divorced in 1996. In 1992, he met Morleigh Steinberg, the choreographer and bellydancer in the ZooTV tour. They began going out in 1993 and married on June 22, 2002. They have 2 children, Sian, a daughter, and Levi, a son.
Edge has done many side projects over the years, the first of which was Snake Charmer, with Jah Wobble, the bassist for PIL, in 1983. He also did much of the soundtrack album for Captive as well as working with Bono on A Clockwork Orange in 1990 and the song GoldenEye for the 1995 James Bond movie of the same name.
As busy as The Edge is with the Elevation tour and several award show wins and performances, he still found time to respond to an online interview with U2.com in June of 2001.
He along with the rest of the band performed at the Super Bowl, the 75th Academy Awards, and the Special Olympics.
He had two wedding ceremonies, where he wed his second wife Morleigh. The first being a civil ceremony in Dublin and the second a Jewish ceremony in the South of France. Where the happy couple also purchased a home next door to Bono and Ali’s.
Edge was also in the spotlight when his demo copy of U2’s fourteenth studio and yet unreleased album was stolen in the South of France. He felt extremely bad because the songs were still unfinished. However, none of the songs made they’re way onto the net before the albums scheduled release, despite widespread predictions. And even if it would have leaked, we would have placed no blame on him, for he is and always will be the greatest, most unique, and talented guitarist to ever walk the Earth.
