The ONE Campaign is a U.S.-based, non-partisan non-profit organization which aims to create the political will to end extreme poverty and fight global disease. Bono is the co-founder of ONE and its most recognizable spokesperson. ONE officially was launched on May 16, 2004 at Liberty Mall in Philadelphia. ONE is closely linked to both the international effort to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the Global Call to Action Against Poverty, which represents the international Make Poverty History movement.
ONE has over 100 partner organizations and over 2.4 million members. The campaign is nonpartisan, reaching out to Americans across the political spectrum and refusing to support legislation unless it has bi-partisan co-sponsorship. ONE was originally founded by a coalition of 11 non-profit humanitarian and advocacy organizations (such as DATA, World Vision, Oxfam America, and Bread for the World) with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Bono, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, and George Clooney are among the more visible supporters of ONE.
The campaign sells T-shirts and white gel bracelets with the word "ONE" on them to increase the visibility of its cause.
The ONE Campaign derives its name from the belief that allocating an additional one percent of the U.S. budget toward providing basic needs like health, education, clean water and food would transform the futures and hopes of an entire generation in the world's poorest countries. We also call for debt cancellation, trade reform and anti–corruption measures in a comprehensive package to help Africa and the poorest nations beat AIDS and extreme poverty.
The goal of ending poverty may seem lofty, but it is within our reach if we take action together as one. You can start now by joining the ONE Campaign and pledging your voice to the fight against extreme poverty and global AIDS.
The ONE Declaration
To be a ONE supporter means signing on to the ONE Declaration:
WE BELIEVE that in the best American tradition of helping others help themselves, now is the time to join with other countries in a historic pact for compassion and justice to help the poorest people of the world overcome AIDS and extreme poverty.
WE RECOGNIZE that a pact including such measures as fair trade, debt relief, fighting corruption and directing additional resources for basic needs—education, health, clean water, food, and care for orphans—would transform the futures and hopes of an entire generation in the poorest countries, at a cost equal to just one percent more of the US budget.
WE COMMIT ourselves - one person, one voice, one vote at a time - to make a better, safer world for all.
