Does U2's Faith/Spirituality Help Or Hurt The Band?

2.) It Hurts

Why?

I think it helps them. In the way they write and in the way they do for others less fortunate. I personally don't think it hurts them at all.

I don't think it hurts them either. I think it gives them another dimension that other groups don't have. I also think it's an asset to them in that it makes them strong enough to survive in the business they're in.

I wouldn't necessarily say that it helps or hurts them, I just think it's part of who they are and people accept it or don't.  Their faith obviously comes across in the good things they do and in their lyrics, and people know that they're Christians...the thing I love about them though, is that they acknowledge other religions...they don't go around saying Christianity is the be-all and end-all, they don't preach or thump their bibles and tell people what to do, they don't have holier-than-thou attitudes, and they don't exclude people of other religions or make them feel like they're stupid or worthless for not being Christian.  That fact certainly makes me, as a fan, and as a non-Christian, respect them.

I agree with you there, Marie. I still think it helps them because it shapes who they are, but I also do like that they don't get bogged down in denomination or in speaking "Christian-ese." I think that's a big turn off. At least it is to me. I think they do come across quite nicely.

OK, I am in an off mood, so I will be blunt and true to my mood today.

If I wanted to listen to a preacher, I would go to a church.  I do not wish to listen to it on my stereo.  U2 is a rock band that makes wonderful and brilliant music.  I love them for that.  They uplift and inspire everyone with their music.  From all faiths.

I am not nor will I ever be a christian, but I love U2 dearly and forever will.

What I get from Bono's (U2's)  message is this....

I don't think that Bono speaks of God as a man sitting up in the sky somewhere treating us all as "sheep" that must be made to obey and follow within the "flock".  He wants us to realize that "God" is more than that.  "It" is within us all....in our hearts....in our souls.

"God" is not making a difference in the world....people are making a difference.  Bono shows us all to do just that.

If U2 did not put their time, money, and hearts into helping those in need and just went around "preaching" they would not hold any credibilty and they would turn so many people off.  They don't do that however.  They also have deep respect for other culture's belief systems. Bono gets that right.  He is teaching acceptance, love, and respect.  He is not trying to convert anyone he is just trying to make the world a better place with a very simple and culturally universal idea....

It's called LOVE.

Sis, you may be in an off mood, but you didn't say anything offensive or wrong. I really like how you put how you feel and what your thoughts are. Very well spoken.

Love ya', Chickiepie.

Oh, good.  I am always afraid of upsetting someone, but feel compelled to speak my mind as well.

Kinda a delicate balancing act there.   LOL

I think this is a delicate subject. Or it can be.

But I also think that as U2 fans, we can speak how we feel and be mature enough to accept others' opinions without flaming.

Speak your mind. I wouldn't want it any other way, Sis.

I love to speak my mind too. Bono does too. Once in a while even Edge gets to.
