White people don't do [soul music] very well because we don't want to let go. Nihilism suits us." - Bono, 2000 Agree... disagree? What do you think about this quote? Background created by ♥u2roxmysox?/A> | | | | |

nihilism - Philosophy.
- An extreme form of skepticism that denies all existence.
- A doctrine holding that all values are baseless and that nothing can be known or communicated.
- Rejection of all distinctions in moral or religious value and a willingness to repudiate all previous theories of morality or religious belief.
- The belief that destruction of existing political or social institutions is necessary for future improvement.
- also Nihilism A diffuse, revolutionary movement of mid 19th-century Russia that scorned authority and tradition and believed in reason, materialism, and radical change in society and government through terrorism and assassination.
- Psychiatry. A delusion, experienced in some mental disorders, that the world or one's mind, body, or self does not exist.

I do think white people can be more reserved in the practices of religion and in culture somewhat. A black church is far different in their worship styles for example.
I don't think this means white people have no soul. Bono is contadicting himself because from what I have seen he is pretty full of soul at times. But perhaps he has to work harder at it. LOL! |

Hm. What an interesting quote. Soul music is embedded in emotion and as a white person I admit I am unwilling or perhaps well trained to keep my emotions in check at all times, at an even keel. I try to be balanced and that may look like I am not interested or emotionally driven on the surface of things. Nihilism is like believeing in nothing though so I think Bono is wrong. I don't think Nihilism suits white people. I wish I could ask him what he meant, or the context of the quote. LV do you know where he said that or what prompted it? I would challenge Bono on that quote just to open up the discussion and get at what he really meant. The older I get, the more education I receive I find myself starting to become more skeptical and jaded...cynical I guess, but not because I beleive in nothing, mostly because I belive in too much and expect so much more from people that I am often let down by the promise of things. I was watching the Democratic National Convention and Barack Obama's speech had me in tears, especially when he brought up MLK. I cynically thought, please don't let him get assasinated too, he brings so much promise, words I want to hear. I think McCain will be the next president, but I wish, hope and crave for a world like the one Obama speaks about when he talks about the promise of America. I get taken in by the emotion of it, and sometimes it is nice to wallow in the idea of it, even if the rational part of me knows it is hooey. |

I seriously fear for Obama if he is elected. From the beginning, he has reminded me of Kennedy and I heard someone at the store the other day flippantly remark that if Obama gets elected, he'll surely be assassinated. I'm like, what is wrong with people???????!!!!!!!! |

Everyone is always out for any type of person who is different from the norm and some radicals see Obama as some sort of threat. I think it would be the same for a woman president or even an obviously disabled president.

Yeah, I think it's sad when a persons support for a candidate is based soley on race and sex. I think it's much more important to base your opinion on their political career and wheither or not they share the same ideals as you. At least that's how I base my opinions. Obama is, I'm sure, a good person and holy shizzz is he motivating but I base my opinions by looking beyond that. He can stand there and say "Yes, I'm going to end our dependence on foreign oil within 10 years!" Ok...great!...ummm, but how?? That is what I want to know, and he isn't telling me. I can't vote for a guy who voted against the surge in Iraq and when asked after seeing that the surge was successful, if he could do it all over and vote again, would he be for it...and he said NO! That is how I believe people should base their opinions on candidates. Of course, I don't think that will ever happen, unfortunately, I think most people...like celebrities, will vote for the guy who looks and sounds the coolest, and not for the guy who has wisdom, years experience and so forth. Sorry if this seems a little intense...I just get very passionate about politics lol I like how you're able to have a good debate here without personally attacking people in a hurtful way, I'm a member of another forum and it's horrible. I can't state one opinion without being swamped with negative responses. It's cool to hear everyone's opinion without having to skip through posts and posts of negative b.s. WOW...that was uber long lol |

Post away, Lyss. Everyone's opinion is valuable. We don't all have to agree to have a good debate. I love reading what people think. |
