Welcome to Mr. M's Make-up bag!* *This thread is being brought to you by UnhitchedWildHorsey! UnhitchedWildHorsey thought it would be a good idea to have a thread dedicated to different products of all kinds; and we agreed! Post products that you have used or wish to use, whether you liked them or not, etc. Is there a product you think our boyz or Ali should use? Is there a product you've tried and absolutely hate? Or absolutely love? Post it here!! | | |

That's too bad, hj. I buy my antibacterial handsoaps for the bathrooms and kitchen there. I love the different scents there and they are usually priced around 3 for $10 - $15. Sometimes they have specials or I have coupons for less. |

That is a bummer, HJ When we used to travel in Canada a lot we used to get such wonderful bargains there. I loved the department store Eatons. They had great back-to-school clothes. My Mom would always let us get quite a few things; because the exchange of money was so awesome then. Of course now there is no incentive for Americans to cross over to shop there. Pity too. Bath And Body Works certainly do have nice products. |

I know! It totally is disappointing! I was very excited to have them open here and then it's not the same, they also don't have some of the scents I like and they don't have the refills for the lights I bought...Boo urns. (I like any of the scents with cotton in the title...lol!) The soaps are sometimes on sale for 3 for $18. But usually it has been 3 for $20, which is just plain too much money. I complained to the manager and she just said, "yeah the prices are just higher here"...and that is crap. You know I would have understood that IF our dollar wasn't as close to the greenback as it is. We have increased prices on books here still too...so even though our dollar is stronger we still pay more. Isn't that silly? It's like gas prices...you know when prices go up the dudes who worked at the station climb up that ladder as fast as corporate headquarters tell them too...but when the prices go down it takes them a week or ten days to get their arses up that ladder to lower the price. Frankly I am sick of it, but I am powerless to change it. Unhitched, Eatons no longer is in business, I used to love that store too! I know what you mean about that, a lot of companies used to rely on Americans border shoppers here, and even though our dollar is stronger a lot of Canadian companies have lost big time money because we've lost a lot of business, and it's not that much cheaper for us to come down to you guys and shop. It's funny...a stronger Canadian dollar is kind of treated as a bad thing here...isn't that weird? But it is a bad thing because the benefits are not being handed down to the consumer. It's one of the things I am bringing up to my candidates here in our federal election which is coming up on the 14th! |

Hj,I am sorry to hear that Eaton's went out of business. It was like our Hudson's here which has also gone out of business. They had the nicest clothing at both of those stores and when you got sales, they were great deals. It is too bad that you are hit with higher pricing like that in Canada. I know that when we order items in the States from Canada that higher cost and higher shipping is tacked on for us; which to me doesn't help sales. I do agree with you that when your dollar /money is stronger your economy actually suffers. I'm not an economist to figure out all the reasons. However, one thing is Canada has a huge tourist industry. Americans have two deficits now in touring there; having to have a passport and the cost with obtaining those for a family is quite significant; where for years it wasn't necessary; and also the money exchange rates not being in our favor. I do not know if this is true or not but I also heard our insurances(American and I am speaking medical) is no longer recognized there. It used to be years back. I happen to know definitely. It was a reason we vacationed there. Since I don't want to in any way bash Canada. It is a beautiful country. I will say seeing places like Niagra Falls(for one example) is still worth traveling there for sure! I still love Canada , and the memories I have from several trips there. I am simply having a discussion here. |

No worries Unhitched, I like your comments, and yes, things have changed lots here, we have a much more conservative government and more conservative policies, which are not bad, but we used to be much more socialist or liberal in the 80's so our policies have shifted and with that a lot of the things you bring up. I didn't know that about medical insurance but I would guess that had more to do with US insurance policies than Canadian policies...and having to have a passport is also an American policy too. Believe me when that changed Canadians were very concerned because not only would it be more difficult for us to travel to the States, but you guys would encounter the same difficulty coming here. That one is directly related to homeland security and 9-11, believe it or not. 70 % of Canadian exports go to the US, so yes, everything from manufacturing to travel/tourism has taken a huge hit. It is very serious here. You guys are our best buddies! We are completely tied to your economy in a way that has our politicians trying to find ways during our federal election to keep our dollar low. Neat eh? I think that is such a strange condradiction. We had an election debate here, in English, and everybody I spoke with today watched the Biden/Palin debate! We seem to love your political process more than we like ours. It is way more interesting and impacts a lot on us too! I hope that you guys will come visit us here, we have such wonderful sights, I love close to West Edmonton Mall which is a huge tourist spot! Sales are slow. They would love you to come visit! Regis and Kelly-lee were just talking about Nova Scotia on their show the other day (Friday). The news media here focused on what a huge boost the local economy that will be if Americans come to Nova Scotia too! It made big news!! |

It is most interesting to have this discussion wih you, HJ . I do know it is due to 911 that things changed here in the USA. For good reason of course. I watched a little smidge of the Biden /Palin debate, not all I would have if I had felt up to watching more. I do think we are fortunate to have the choices we do here in the States and all the debates and issues brought out for each candidate. We have a lot of time and information with which to make our choices. If I were a person who could travel at this point of my life; which I really am not, I would love to visit the Mount Olivet Cemetery in Halifax, Novia Scotia; where the mass grave for the Titanic Victims is located. I am interested in Titanic history. I also love nature and being outdoors. I just don't have the health to cooperate however. |

I haven't used the St. Ive's Apricot Scrub myself, Lyss; but it sounds like it is working out well for you. What a fantastic bargain too . I used to have foot scrub from St. Ive's that I liked a lot. It was Berry scented and worked well on dry winter skin, as well as to get the footsies looking nice for showing in the summer. |

Today I went and got my Flu and Pneumonia shots. It is my recommendation for today that everyone look into doing the same. It is the perfect time of year to go see about getting vaccinated. It is especially important to get them if you have chronic health issues, are elderly, live with people who have chronic health conditions or work with the elderly or children. Many stores and clinics offer the shots for reduced rates, and in some cases they are covered by insurance. If you live in the states they are covered by Medicare. It takes some time for the shots to begin working in your body; so get them now before the winter illness outbreaks. |

Since I love to "putter" in the garden all spring and summer...I don't paint my nails during that time. When I do paint them in the Fall and Winter; I love dark colored nail polish. My favorites are: Merlot, Crimson, and Black. I also love Brown colors in the Fall. What are some of your favorite nail colors or brands of polishes to purchase? |

I love the dark colours too! I love deep rich burgundy and I go for dark blue...but mostly I pick black. ( I have a bottle of black in my desk at work now that is Rimmel black with "Lycra" in it and it is only for chips, but it works like a charm) Not because I am all goth or anything, lol, but because it matches everything and is easy to fix if it chips. To me a good polish has to last at least 7 days. And I am an accountant so I file and use an adding machine all day long so I am tough on polish (I also put a clear coat over top every other night to keep it shiny and looking fresh). The one brand that has lived up to that y day challenge is called China glaze. I have a collection called Fine Wines and Chocolate and it has all the colours I LOVE. I also love a colour by OPI called "have you seen my limo"...and I even take that to the manicure place when I go get a maincure or pedicure. They look at me like I am crazy when I bring my own bottle of polish...LOL! |
