The more I listen to ATYCLB the more I realize it is my favorite U2 album.
Which comes as kind of a shock to me...really.
What this song means to me personally --I guess you could say I was having a crisis of faith at that time in my life and this vaptured the way I felt. It's amazing how U2 manages to do that so well.
The lyrics sum up human failure to me...you know how on the outside we try to make it through to make the world a better place but that internal voice, the one that tears you down sometimes-the one that questions if you have done enough, given enough, tried your hardest...and wonder how other people do it and make it look so easy.
Before this song I just would not have imagines Bono wondering these things...but I am so grateful that he sings these lyrics to show he is human and wonders about it all too.
Actually...I feel like these lyrics ask what I would like to ask Bono.
When Bono looks at the world what is it that he sees?
My favorite lyric has to be:
"When the night is someone elses
And you're trying to get some sleep
When your thoughts are too expensive
To ever want to keep"
I have heard Bono wrote this for Ali and her commitment to the victims of the Chernobyl fallout. Which is very touching...I have also heard Bono wrote this as a letter to Jesus...
After the tragedy of 9-11 it took on new meaning for me...as did ATYCLB.
Did it for you too? (Tee hee is said U2...LOL!)
U2 has never played it live either! Neat hey? In U2 by U2, page 300 they talk about how The Edge realized that becauae the song had been recorded so quickly he couldn't remember how to play it. LOL! Because of this, the song was one of only three from the album never played live in its entirety, the other two being Peace on Earth and Grace. They did play a snippet of it on the Elevation tour, but only in Kansas City.
