Waller Reviews:

Written by UnhitchedWildhorsey - True musicians live to play, experience and share different types of music. They love sound and to experiment with all of its properties: bending, twisting, expanding and pushing their creativity; along with their instruments--to the limits.

U2 are true musicians with both instruments and voice. They don't like categories, putting up walls, or being labled and packaged up. I believe they even fear that along with their superstardom and signature sound; has come binding constraint on what they love...simply making music.
So often I wonder just what great pieces of music we'd hear from U2 outside of the U2 sound. Would Bono sing more classical and opera pieces? Would they embrace showtunes, or the blues? Would Edge like to belt out a metal guitar rif? Would Adam venture into reggae and Larry hip-hop? You can find little bits of many styles in a U2 song, but still there is a U2 sound. I'm certainly not complaining...but it is fact. Along comes a freedom project one day to the guys in U2. We know it now as 'Passengers'.

'Passengers' was a chance to step away from U2 and make other kinds of music. A chance to form new ideas and just see where they would go. Passengers is not U2ish, and I might add it is not mainstream. With that said there are some amazing easy on the ears numbers contained on the album. Two such numbers are: 'Your Blue Room' and 'Miss Sarajevo'. To me these are the two stand-out songs on this musical outing. Beautiful songs to listen to and how can anyone go wrong when they team up with (the late) Pavarotti? Two numbers I would detail as haunting are: 'Beach Sequence' and 'Corpse ( These Chains Are way Too Long)'.

On 'Passengers' there is less need for a radio hit and more a need to show versatility. There is not as much of a clear cut bigger than life lead singer and no stadium sing along tunes. This is an artist's canvas alive with a vivid spray of color...a piece hanging in the gallery to admire and ponder. 'Passengers' proved the guys in U2 are not some formula. This album is also special because it brings to the forefront Brian Eno; who through his talents has aided and expanded U2's creative spark for years. Brian thinks outside the box and when you've been around as long as U2, that asset can re-light a flickering flame to its full blazing potential.

'Passengers' is truly a distinct album. It strikes me as the type of work one listens to over and over in order to peel back layer after layer. The lyrics on this album are sparse but when they exist their brevity belies their complexity. In the waves of music here you can soon find yourself riding a swell of sound into an enourmous sea.

'Passengers' may be at first strange to U2 fans ears...but it is very worthy of your attention.
