Waller Reviews: Review by written by UnhitchedWildhorsey for U2 Graffiti Wall - One of my fondest U2 memories to this day. Well I am not sure that the band feel the same energy I feel when I give this one a listen; I am sure among U2 fans I am not alone. I think maybe U2 see this as a slight glorification of themselves, and only see their larger than life persona's in the movie; but when you think back to that time period are they really so out of step? The 80's were big, bold and loud. The 80's made few apologies and that includes the hairstyles, and the clothing we now laugh at. U2 kept it in check far more than most and they became a little conscience for us all to carry around. On the radio we could hear a lot of dance music and synthesizers, but we could also hear Bullet The Blue Sky, or Pride.
Rattle And Hum gave us a closing note that was U2. A closing to that decade where they held us all in awe as they preached and careened onstage, and on MTV; making a new kind of difference in social movement and inciting a wave of activism. Playing Rock music in a unique and spectacular way that made you take notice. They had been the big band of the 80's and this live cut album and movie gave us a small inside job with them as the roadie, or uber fan. If you hadn't been fortunate enough to see them live for The Joshua Tree Tour; you could listen to the live songs, and pretend you were there. It was and still is to this day the U2 fan's guilty pleasure.
There is in my opinion nothing to be ashamed of about this album. The live cuts fair as a cut above the rest of live bands, and the new tracks play out beautiful as well. This album is the first U2 album I wore out twice, and I loved the thrill of seeing this movie in the theatre. The excitement then harkens to the excitement today of seeing U23D.
My favorite songs from Rattle And Hum are: Van Diemen's Land, Desire, Hawkmoon 269, When Love Comes To Town, Heartland, & All I want Is You. ©2003 - 2008 U2 Graffiti Wall. All rights reserved.
