October 24, I went to The Palace of Auburn Hills to see the U2 concert. It was amazing! The first thing to amaze me was this: My tickets were row CC. Well, at Pine Knob, the double lettered tickets are seated behind the single lettered tickets. So, I thought I was going to be pretty far back. WRONG! I was seated in the third row from the stage! Oh my goodness! I could actually see the colors of their eyes! lol. Thank you, Larry Mullen Jr., for the great seats! You are not only the best drummer in the world, but also the best to the fans!
It was a sold out house; not an open seat to be found. The night began with "City of Blinding Lights", confetti falling from the ceiling and a brilliant light show. After that song ended, Bono yelled out, "Uno, dos, tres, catorce!" and we knew it was time for "Vertigo"! Throughout the night, Bono kept yelling, "I can't believe this is Detroit on a Monday night! This feels like Saturday!" During "I Will Follow", he yelled, "Now, this is church!"
The boys seemed to be having as much fun as we all were. They played for nearly three hours. There were three songs they didn't play that I really wanted to hear ("Running to Stand Still" because I love it when Bono plays harmonica, Crumbs and "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses"), but the night was wonderful! I have never sat that close before and U2's playing was tops. The only way I could truly describe this night is to buy the upcoming DVD and watch it.
Highlights of the evening:
Bono flubbing up the beginning of "Stuck in a Moment" -- he was openly laughing as was The Edge and the audience. It was a fun moment.
Edge's backing vocals were tops! He has a smooth tenor voice.
Adam's bass is the best, all the time!
Bono singing Pavarotti's part in "Miss Sarajevo" and doing a really nice job of it. When he said they were going to do "Miss Sarajevo", the crowd went wild, so Bono quickly said, "Pavarotti is not here!" lol
Bono asking, "Who has a cell phone?" And suddenly, cellphone lights going on all over the stadium. Bono said it looked like the Milky Way and that this was a "real 21st century moment."
Edge's guitar during "All Because of You" and "Bullet the Blue Sky". These were songs I couldn't wait to hear. And Edge just went crazy on his solos. He was very animated in a Spock kind of way. lol He seemed to really like walking down the ramp on my side of the stage, too, which I can't complain about either.
Bono asking Edge, "What's next?" all the time and then Edge kicking in with a song.
"Love and Peace or Else" blew me away! The drums were kickin' and then when Bono took the drums over from Larry, I thought he was going to break them.
My favorite song of all time.... "One". Bono sang the rare third verse which isn't even on the record but something he sings sometimes live. It left me in tears and knowing I had seen something great.
Three encores!
"40", when they switch instruments and the crowd is still singing, "How long to sing this song" for 15 minutes after the show has ended.
The crowd was in a fever and I think the band really drew on that. This is a group who are at the top of their game and they know how to put on the best show on earth.
