Midnight Diver
(To Magnum's "Le Morts Dansant")
When you look do you see what happens?
Do you see what’s really there?
When you ask do you hear the answer?
Do you ever really want to share?
Drink in his glass still lying.
Eyes Faraway with bloodshot stares.
*Cigarette from his mouth just hanging.
No one sees and no one cares.
Just a night that was born in sorrow.
Just a night when the rain came down.
Just a night that will not end tomorrow.
A tree will fall without a sound.
A multitude looks straight through him;
Could any there describe his face?
There are none to know his dreams and losses;
There are none to curse the twists of fate.
He stands alone in the moonlight;
Water black with a welcoming sheen.
Bridge so high above the foaming river;
Nothing left but a broken dream.
Just a night that was born in sorrow.
Just a night when the rain came down.
Just a night that will not end tomorrow.
A tree will fall without a sound.
Dawn breaks cool upon the sleeping city.
Birdsong lifts the silent air.
What became of the midnight diver?
Was he ever really there?
