FROLICKING WITH A STICK??

What is "frolicking", and why with a stick? First of all, the dictionary describes frolicking as merriment, to make merry, have fun, to romp. Why would anyone want to romp, above all things, with a stick? Someone might think that you were one cookie short of a doz@en. Let's see just who's short.

People pay g6od money to see someone swing a baseball bat, which is nothing more than a fat stick, or even at a hockey, game where a bunch of guys are sliding around on the ice waving v sticks around trying to get this little round thing in a net, and for what? One point, @vhlch is definitely no good to eat. On the other hand, if one was to whack a rabbit over the head with a stick, you could have rabbit stew or roast rabbit or even mince meat pie, another game is Polo, which involves riding a horse while waving a stick, or at a wrestling match where you might hear some one yell "STICKUM"I At the Olympics you get a gold metal for throwing a stick the farthest.

Let's look at some useful uses for the lowly stick. A woman might prance about the house splattering flies with a square piece of plastic or screen on the end of a stick. The house itself is probably built with sticks, more commonly known as two-by-fours. Lawns are raked with sticks with special attachments on the end. A stick couid also be used to beat off pesky snakes or a

I-i,- skunk that digging around in your flower bed. Did you know that most people pay a lot of money every year to have someone place big long sticks in the ground along the road and string wires on them?

Have you ever tried camping or hiking without a stick? Can't be done. You and everything else would fall down. A tent is held up with sticks. In my case, several long sticks make up the frame of a teepee. If you get lost, a lean-to or a debris shelter can be constructed with sticks and leaves. Cooking over a camp fire couldn't be done without the participation of a few sticks. Your food may even be stirred with a stick. Make sure there are no bugs attached before stirring.

Hiking is much more enjoyable with a stick. In my mind, or what is left of it, the perfect hiking stick is about six feet long and thick enough to fit your hand comfortably. A young Maple sapling would be happy to give it's life for this purpose. If you spend a lot of time hiking as I do, a plain stick just won't do. You have to dress it up a bit. My special stick has a ring on it for every day that I have spent in the mountains. On top I carved a fancy knob under which has my name. Tied to the top is a deer tail along with a turkey feather. It's been faithfully at my side for

, the past five years. They just don't get any more faithful..

As you can see, without sticks there wouldn't be any reason to frolic. Jut try to count all, the sticks you use every day. I'll bet you can't count them all.
