Becoming a recent member of this group, and scroll sawing portraits for less than 2 months, I was hoping to get some feedback on my progress so far. I have included 4 of my recent portrait attempts and would appreciate any and all comments and suggestions. Most of you have been at this a lot longer than I have, and constructive criticism from people with knowledge and experience is always appreciated.
Bob, I agree with Linda....nice job on all of them. I think the only thing I would have done a little different would have been to add a liitle shadowing in the hair of the man in the last picture. Keep up the great work!
Bob: For two months experience I think you are doing very well. Palefaces with white hair are a challenge. Kind of like doing a polar bear on an ice floe. I try to add hair lines or any hint of a shadow to provide character. I draw the features in my portraits (just can't get the hang of adjusting contrast etc to get an acceptable pattern). This gives more latitude in what I add to define the subject as I am not limited by program controls. One trick is to adjust the brightness/contrast (on a copy of the picture) to the point that it is a horrible picture but the defining characteristics are more visible. In the case of YM, there appear to be some highlights in her hair which could be used to avoid the solid black. I did a quick sketch to illustrate. You will develop your own style over time. It's art and there is no one way to do it. As long as the result is acceptable to you, it's good. Dan
