I have been having problems with my LOWER blade holder all of a sudden. I cannot get the holder tight enough to hold a 2A spiral blade or smaller. They just become loose. I have tried everything. The plates do not show wear. I have used these blades in the past without too much problem, but sometimes, they loosen up and I have to retighten them. I dip the ends in mineral spirits to get ride of oils on the blade and have even toughed sandpaper to them with no improvement. Has anyone had a problem???. I have a quick release for the TOP and it works great, it's just the bottom one. I tried to get a quick change for the bottom, however, they said they did not make one for this particular model because there is not enough room for it. please help...help...help!!! Thanks in advance Ron |

i used to have the same problem... i switched to flying dutchman flat end spirals...i also stripped out the square threaded block... i ended up drilling out the shot threads and putting a longer bolt in and putting a nut on the other side (this has happened to both 40-640 i've owned). i know now i have to use a wrench but it's cheaper than replacing. |

Jerry and banished monkey; Thanks for your ideas. I took the assembly apart and sanded the surfaces and that has helped ( think I will re-sand a little more). Also thanks for the bolt and nut idea if I ever strip the threads. I also talked to Mike at Mike's workshop and he didn't think the flat ends would help much and to flatten my regular spiral blade ends with a hammer, also, flat end spirals don't come in 2A or smaller blades which is my basic problem. The larger blades usually stay put in the block. Well, thanks again. This scroller web site has been a life saver for me. There aren't many scrollers in the immediate area that I can find, especially portraits. Ron |

Ron, one other suggestion. Take the bottom clamp off and glue a small piece of emory cloth to either one side or both sides of the clamp. I would use a fairly fine grit. That should really hold the smaller blades. I have the Delta P-20 with the quickset II blade clamps and have never had a problem with them. Your saw is the SS350LS or the SS250 ? Good luck with it. Mick, you ask if my saw is a SS350LS or SS250. I cannot find anything that indicates either of these numbers. On the saw plate, all it says is Model 40-640 and the SER # is R9413. The manual says 20" variable speed scroll saw with quickset blade changing feature. Manual is dated 8-15-91. I bought it new in 1994 and didn't hardly use until last year when I retired and started doing scrolling and portraits. Mick does this help? Ron |

Ron, I believe your saw is the older 20" VS that you need a special wrench to tighten or loosen the bottom clamp. There is not enough room on the bottom to put the newer type Quickset II clamp in there. I would try to glue the emory cloth to the clamp if you can get in there to do it. My first saw was that same model and I can't just remember how much room there is under the table. I believe you can tilt the table enough to get at the clamp. Some silicone glue on the emory cloth and let it dry over night. Clean the clamp good with mineral sprits or paint thinner before gluing. Hope this helps. Mick |
