My father just passed, and I am trying to establish a price for a webley revolver/pistol to sell for my mother. I have looked all over the internet, and auctions, like gun broker and can find nothing exactly like it. It is a bright finish (nickel?) in very good shape, with one spot inside the trigger guard where the finish seems to have flaked, that is what made me think it was nickel not stainless??. It has no name or insignia and only 3GB stamped on it. It is a top break open style, with a wood grip and lanyard loop. It has appox. 5 inch barrel octigon. it comes in a presentation box, with a screw driver, a bottle of oil and about 50 rounds marked 450. The oak box, has a bronze/brass midalion on the lid. the inside lid has a label James Gibson & Co. Glasgow.. It looks very simular to other pistols in the Webley line, and some of different comfigerations come in a simular box. Does anyone know what this may be or a direction as to where to research.. thank you, ol hounddog |

Hounddog, our condolences on your Dad's
passing--
As to your Webley, well, the fact that it doesn't seem to
have any British proof marks/stamps, makes me a little suspicious-- also, I
can't ever remember running across a nickel plated Webley, albeit Webley did
sell handguns to the public, way back when.
I own one, a Mark IV with "Bird's Head" grip,
which is an early one, and it has all kinds of stampings and proof marks on it.
I can't help but wonder if yours was made in India, there were a lot of
"knock-offs" of all the British handguns and long arms made there, in the Khyber
Pass area, if memory serves me. A guy tried to pass one off on me, as being
original British, at a Florida Gun Show, but I'm not that easily fooled! No
proof marks on it, and crude workmanship-- a lot of these were literally made
from scratch, in some guy's basement, without the proper tooling, steel,
and equipement.
You might try the Webley Website, (they now
only make air pistols, in England), for more history/info.
Cheers,
Fred (Honcho)

thanks for looking honcho.. I have a friend that thinks it may have been made by wilkerson, the sword co.. and may be stainless.. he found where they were commisioned to make such a pistol used by some officers.. but as you mentioned not having the stampings? it probably isn't of much value.. although it does appear to be of good quality. guess I will keep looking, need the antique road show to come to town .. lol ol hounddog |

HoundDog, I had another thought, I have a freind who
collects Webleys, and carried one when he was a Constable/Police Oficer,
in Nothern Ireland-- This guy probably has forgotten more about Webleys, than
most people ever knew! His E-mail address is: [email protected] and his name is Martin
Cairnduff. He's always been very helpful, when I had questions about
Webleys. If anyone can shed some light on what you have, Martin can. A Digital
photo would surely help, with as much info as you can give him. (Is it a .455
caliber?)
Hope this helps,
Fred (Honcho) |
